Chapter 4: The Woman From My Past
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The woman standing by the auditorium doors looked exactly like the person I remembered, but older.
Her hair was shorter now.
There were faint lines around her eyes.
But I knew that face.
I knew that voice.
“Laura…”
My hands went cold.
“Rachel?””
The name escaped my mouth before I could stop it.
Ethan looked between us.
“You know her?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because Rachel wasn’t just an old friend.
She was the person who had been there on the worst night of my life.
The night my marriage finally broke.
The night I walked out of my house with a suitcase in one hand and a crying five-year-old Ethan holding the other.
Rachel slowly walked down the aisle.
Every step felt like she was carrying a piece of my past toward me.
Marcus saw her.
And the color drained from his face.
That was when I knew.
He remembered her too.
Chloe leaned toward him.
“Who is that?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
“Marcus?””
Still nothing.
Rachel stopped at the edge of the stage.
“I’m sorry for coming like this.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Rachel looked at him.
Then at me.
“Because your mother spent eighteen years carrying a lie that wasn’t hers.””
The auditorium became silent again.
I felt my chest tighten.
“What lie?””
Rachel looked at Marcus.
The question didn’t need to be asked.
Everyone already knew.
Marcus looked away.
Rachel opened the folder in her hands.
“I tried to tell you years ago.””
My voice shook.
“Tell me what?””
She swallowed.
“The truth about why Marcus left.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Because I had spent eighteen years thinking I knew the story.
I thought Marcus and I had simply fallen apart.
I thought he got tired of being married.
I thought maybe I had failed somehow.
But Rachel was looking at me like she knew I had been blaming myself for something I didn’t do.
Ethan came closer.
“Mom?””
I looked at him.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Not really.
Rachel opened the folder.
“There are documents here.””
Marcus suddenly stood.
“Rachel, don’t.””
The entire room turned toward him.
Rachel looked at him calmly.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
His face hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
She almost laughed.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Chloe looked confused.
“Marcus, what is happening?””
He ignored her.
Ethan looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Marcus’s silence answered before his words did.
Ethan stepped back.
“You knew she was coming.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“This isn’t the place.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked around.
“This is exactly the place.””
Rachel handed me the folder.
I hesitated before taking it.
My fingers touched the papers inside.
The first page was an email.
The date was eighteen years ago.
My eyes moved across the screen.
And then I saw Marcus’s name.
My heart stopped.
It was a conversation between Marcus and someone named Daniel.
I read the first sentence.
“Once Laura signs the divorce papers, everything will be easier…”
I looked up.
My stomach dropped.
Divorce papers?
I hadn’t signed anything.
Not yet.
I kept reading.
The next line made my hands shake.
“She’ll believe the reason is the affair rumor. She won’t look deeper.””
I stopped.
The world around me blurred.
Ethan noticed.
“Mom?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly I remembered.
The rumor.
The one that destroyed everything.
The one where Marcus accused me of being the reason our marriage failed.
The one where people whispered that I had become distant.
Cold.
Unfaithful.
But I had never cheated.
Not once.
I looked at Marcus.
“What is this?””
He said nothing.
“What is this, Marcus?””
His jaw tightened.
“Laura, it’s complicated.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No, it isn’t.””
She pointed at the papers.
“It’s simple.””
The room held its breath.
“Marcus wanted out of the marriage before Laura knew why.””
Chloe stared at him.
“Why?””
Rachel looked at her.
“Because he was already planning a future with someone else.””
A wave of whispers moved through the audience.
Marcus looked furious.
“This is ridiculous.””
Rachel pulled out another document.
“No.””
She placed it on the table.
“This is a timeline.””
Ethan picked it up.
I watched his face change as he read.
Then he looked at his father.
“You were seeing her before the divorce?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Ethan looked sick.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because Marcus had moved on.
Not because he had married Chloe.
But because for eighteen years, I believed I was the reason.
I believed I wasn’t enough.
Rachel reached for my hand.
“You need to know something, Laura.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She glanced at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“Marcus didn’t just hide the affair.””
My heartbeat quickened.
“What else did he hide?””
Rachel slowly opened the folder again.
And pulled out one final page.
A page that made Marcus whisper:
“No.””
May you like
Rachel placed it in my hand.
“He hid what happened the night Ethan was born.””
