Chapter 10: The Battle He Fought Behind My Back

Ethan stared at the document like it was written in another language.

Like his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

I watched his expression change.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

Then something much deeper.

Betrayal.

“Dad…”

Marcus didn’t move.

The entire auditorium waited.

Ethan looked up slowly.

“Is this true?””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“Ethan, it’s not that simple.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I had heard that sentence too many times.

It was always what people said when the truth was simple but painful.

Ethan held up the paper.

“You filed for custody changes two years ago?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence answered.

I looked at Marcus.

“Two years ago?””

My voice barely came out.

Marcus looked at me.

“Laura…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You tried to take him from me two years ago?””

His eyes moved around the room.

Searching for an explanation.

But there wasn’t one.

Not anymore.

Daniel looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another moment where everyone knew something except me.

“How many people knew my life was being discussed behind my back?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was too painful.

Ethan looked at Marcus.

“Why?””

Marcus’s expression softened.

“Because I thought I could give you more.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

It wasn’t a happy sound.

“More?””

Marcus nodded.

“Better opportunities.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You mean a different life.””

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

Marcus looked frustrated.

“I thought your mother kept you from reaching your potential.””

The words landed like a punch.

I stared at him.

After everything.

After all these years.

He still believed that.

Ethan stepped forward.

“You thought Mom held me back?””

Marcus hesitated.

And that hesitation was enough.

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Wow.””

The auditorium felt heavy.

I wanted to say something.

I wanted to defend myself.

But then I realized something.

I didn’t need to.

Ethan already knew.

He looked at Marcus.

“Do you know what Mom did when you were missing?””

Marcus looked away.

Ethan continued.

“She worked extra shifts.””

A pause.

“She stayed up with me when I was sick.””

Another pause.

“She learned how to fix my bike because you said you didn’t have time.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“She didn’t keep me from anything.””

He looked directly at his father.

“She built everything I had.””

The crowd remained silent.

Even Chloe looked uncomfortable.

For once, nobody was defending her.

Nobody was defending Marcus.

Because the truth had become too obvious.

Daniel stepped forward.

“There’s something else in that file.””

Ethan looked down.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

Ethan unfolded the next page.

His eyebrows pulled together.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

I moved closer.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“This isn’t about custody.””

A chill ran through me.

“What do you mean?””

Ethan looked back at the document.

“It says Dad wanted to change my legal guardian status.””

The words made my stomach drop.

Marcus quickly said:

“It was only paperwork.””

Ethan turned.

“Paperwork to do what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“To make Marcus the primary decision-maker.””

My heart sank.

“He wanted control.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I was his father.””

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“And Mom was his mother.””

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood.

This wasn’t about being a parent.

It was about power.

I looked at Marcus.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked at the floor.

“I knew you would fight.””

I almost smiled.

Because he was right.

I would have.

Not because I wanted to hurt him.

Because I wanted to protect Ethan.

And he knew that.

Ethan folded the paper.

“I can’t believe you.””

Marcus looked wounded.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

My son shook his head.

“You keep saying you love me.””

Marcus nodded.

“I do.””

“Then why did every decision you make hurt Mom?””

The question broke something in the room.

Marcus had no answer.

Because maybe for the first time, he realized the damage wasn’t just between adults.

Children always pay the price for the secrets adults create.

The principal stepped closer again.

“We need to finish this ceremony.””

Ethan nodded.

“I know.””

Then he looked at me.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“I need you to hear something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

He smiled sadly.

“Everything I have today…”

He looked at Marcus.

“…was never because someone gave me a better life.””

Then he looked back at me.

“It was because someone refused to give up on mine.””

The applause started slowly.

Then louder.

People stood.

I cried.

Not because I wanted anyone to feel sorry for me.

But because after eighteen years, my son had finally said the words I never allowed myself to say.

I mattered too.

Then Ethan looked at the last page in the envelope.

His smile disappeared.

“Mom.””

I wiped my tears.

“What?””

He looked confused.

“There’s a name here.””

My stomach tightened.

“What name?””

He turned the paper around.

And when I saw it, my blood went cold.

Because it was my name.

May you like

But underneath it was a signature.

A signature I had never written.
