Chapter 12: The Person Behind The Curtain
Nobody spoke.
The name hung in the air.
But Daniel hadn’t said it yet.
He looked at the document again.
Like he was hoping he wouldn’t have to.
“Who?”” Ethan asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
He finally said it.
“Your sister.””
The world stopped.
I stared at him.
“My sister?””
Daniel nodded.
I couldn’t process the words.
My sister.
The person who held Ethan when he was born.
The person who stood beside me during my wedding.
The person I trusted.
“No.””
The word came out softly.
Daniel looked down.
“The payments were made to her account.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel reached for my arm.
“Laura…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“She wouldn’t.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Mom…”
I saw the confusion in his eyes.
The same confusion I felt.
Because betrayal from strangers hurt.
But betrayal from family destroyed something deeper.
Daniel opened another file.
“She was involved from the beginning.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked at Chloe.
“You knew?””
Chloe didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Marcus’s face changed.
“You knew about her too?””
Chloe whispered.
“She helped.””
I felt sick.
“Helped with what?””
Chloe looked at me.
And for the first time, she looked almost guilty.
“She told Marcus things.””
My voice dropped.
“What things?””
“Things about your marriage.””
I stared.
“My marriage?””
Chloe nodded.
“She told him you were unhappy.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“She told him?””
My sister.
The person who knew every struggle.
Every fear.
Every private conversation.
“She told him I was unhappy?””
Daniel nodded.
“She convinced him you were going to leave eventually.””
I closed my eyes.
All those years.
All those doubts.
And the person feeding them wasn’t even a stranger.
It was someone who knew exactly where to hurt me.
Ethan moved closer.
“Mom.””
I looked at him.
“I’m okay.””
But this time, he didn’t believe me.
Because he knew me.
The same way I knew him.
Marcus looked devastated.
“How could she do that?””
I looked at him.
The question almost made me angry.
Because he was asking it now.
After everything.
“You should know.””
He looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because you believed her.””
The words silenced him.
“You trusted everyone except me.””
He lowered his eyes.
And for the first time, he looked ashamed.
Ethan looked at Chloe.
“So this was planned?””
Chloe shook her head.
“No.””
But nobody believed her.
“You wanted my mom gone.””
Chloe’s voice became defensive.
“I wanted a chance.””
Ethan stared.
“A chance at what?””
She looked at Marcus.
“At happiness.””
The answer made me almost pity her.
Almost.
Because she had spent years chasing something she had already destroyed.
Daniel stepped forward.
“There’s still one unanswered question.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at the original document.
“The forged signature.””
My heart tightened.
Daniel continued.
“We know who benefited.””
He looked at Marcus.
“We know who had the motive.””
Then he looked at Chloe.
“But we don’t know who actually signed it.””
Ethan looked at the paper.
“Can we prove it?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel reached into his folder.
“I brought the handwriting analysis.””
My chest tightened.
“You already had it?””
Daniel nodded.
“I knew today would force the truth into the open.””
He handed the report to Ethan.
My son read it.
His face slowly changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Ethan?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Dad…”
Marcus stepped forward.
“What?””
Ethan handed him the report.
Marcus read.
And then his face went completely pale.
Because the person who forged my signature…
Was someone standing only a few feet away.
Someone who had spent the entire day pretending to support my son.
Ethan looked toward the front doors.
And whispered:
“Mom…”
I followed his gaze.
May you like
A woman had just entered the auditorium.
And she was carrying the original document.
