Chapter 13: The Woman Who Raised Me

I spent my entire life believing my aunt Claire was the safest person I knew.

When my mother died, Claire was the one who held my hand at the funeral.

She was the one who stayed up with me when I couldn’t sleep.

She was the one who told me, “Family takes care of family.””

For years, those words had comforted me.

Now they felt like a lie.

I stared at the photograph in my hand.

A younger Claire stood beside my mother.

They were smiling.

Happy.

Close.

Like sisters.

The date written on the back was from before Marcus was found.

Before the truth came out.

Before everything.

“How?”” I whispered.

Evelyn looked devastated.

“I never thought she was involved.””

Marcus took the photograph from me.

“Who is she?””

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

A voice behind us answered.

Everyone turned.

The front door was open.

And the woman standing there was the last person I expected to see.

Claire.

My aunt.

The woman who had raised me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes moved from me to Marcus.

Then to the photograph in his hand.

“I knew this day would come.””

The sentence hurt more than anything.

Because it meant she had been waiting.

“You knew?””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Claire stepped inside slowly.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Say my name like you’re still the person I thought you were.””

Pain crossed her face.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Claire looked at him.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice became harder.

“You don’t know what it feels like to spend your entire life wondering why nobody wanted you.””

Claire looked down.

“I do.””

The room went still.

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

Then at him.

“I know because I was there.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I was there the night Richard took you away.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“I was nineteen.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“I was your mother’s best friend.””

I felt dizzy.

The woman who had packed my school lunches.

The woman who had attended every birthday.

The woman who had told me my mother loved me.

She had been there.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because I was young and scared.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She wiped her eyes.

“It’s not.””

She looked at me.

“My father worked for Richard.””

I felt cold.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“He was one of the people who helped cover everything up.””

Marcus stared.

“And you knew?””

“I knew pieces.””

Everyone seemed to know pieces.

Pieces that had destroyed our lives.

Claire continued.

“Richard told me he was protecting Linda. He told me Marcus would be given a better life.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“And you believed him?””

Claire looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“Until I saw the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That he wasn’t trying to protect anyone.””

She looked at Marcus.

“He was erasing you.””

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because by the time I understood, it was too late.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It was never too late.””

She looked away.

“You were six years old when your mother found out something was wrong.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She started searching.””

My breath caught.

“She knew?””

Claire nodded.

“Your mother never stopped looking for answers.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why didn’t she find me?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because someone stopped her.””

“Who?””

Claire looked at me.

And the answer was worse than I expected.

“Me.””

Nobody moved.

The confession hung in the air.

I couldn’t breathe.

“You?””

Claire nodded.

“I destroyed the letters.””

My stomach dropped.

“What letters?””

“The ones Linda wrote to Marcus.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“You had them?””

Claire covered her mouth.

“I was supposed to deliver them.””

“You kept them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because Richard threatened you.””

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

“He said if I helped Linda find you, he would make sure Sarah lost everything.””

I felt tears forming.

“He threatened me?””

Claire nodded.

“He knew you were the one person Linda couldn’t lose.””

The room became silent.

For years, I thought my aunt had saved me from pain.

But the truth was more complicated.

She had protected me.

And she had destroyed someone else.

Then Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept one thing.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“The final letter.””

She handed it to him.

“My father never found this.””

Marcus took it.

His fingers trembled.

Claire looked at him.

“This is the letter your mother wrote the day she died.””

Marcus opened his mouth.

May you like

But before he could read it, Claire whispered:

“There’s something inside that explains why Richard was so afraid of the truth.””
