Chapter 12: The Secret Between Sisters
Nobody moved.
The phone was still against my ear.
But I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.
“What did you say?””
The woman repeated the name.
“Sarah Mitchell.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching me.
Marcus.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Frank.
Nobody understood.
Because the name she had said was impossible.
It was mine.
“I don’t understand.””
The woman sighed.
“I know this is confusing.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You said there was another beneficiary.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“Sarah Mitchell.””
I looked at Marcus.
His expression changed.
“That makes no sense.””
The woman continued.
“The documents were created before your grandfather’s death. They indicate you were included in the trust.””
“Why?””
“That’s something we were hoping you could explain.””
I almost laughed.
Because I couldn’t explain anything anymore.
My entire life had become a collection of questions.
After I ended the call, nobody spoke.
Finally, Marcus said:
“Your grandfather left something for you too.””
I nodded slowly.
“But why?””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Maybe he knew the truth would eventually come out.””
Frank shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He wasn’t that kind of man.””
The certainty in his voice was disturbing.
“What do you mean?””
Frank looked at me.
“Richard Mitchell didn’t leave things behind because he felt guilty.””
“Then why?””
“Because he always planned ahead.””
A chill ran through me.
“What are you saying?””
Frank looked at the folder.
“I’m saying this might not be an apology.””
Marcus understood first.
“A strategy.””
Frank nodded.
“He knew people would search after his death.””
I felt sick.
“So he prepared for that.””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
I suddenly remembered something.
Something small.
Something I had ignored.
After my grandfather died, his lawyer had called me.
He said there were “family matters” to discuss.
I had refused.
I was grieving.
I didn’t want anything from him.
Maybe I should have listened.
“I need to find those documents.””
Marcus stood.
“I’m coming with you.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t have to.””
He smiled sadly.
“Sarah.””
He held up the old receipt.
“I crossed seventeen years for you.””
A small laugh escaped me despite everything.
“You’re impossible.””
“Probably.””
For the first time in days, I smiled.
A real one.
Then Frank spoke.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He hesitated.
“Richard wasn’t alone.””
My smile disappeared.
“You said that already.””
“No.””
Frank shook his head.
“I mean someone helped him even after Marcus was gone.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who?””
Frank looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
The answer surprised me.
“You don’t know?””
“I only saw one name.””
“Whose?””
Frank reached into the box and removed a photograph.
He handed it to me.
On the back was a handwritten note.
A name.
A date.
And a message.
I read it.
My hands started shaking.
Because the name written there belonged to someone I knew.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had comforted me after my mother died.
Someone who had always told me they were protecting me.
I looked up slowly.
Marcus saw my face.
“Sarah?””
I whispered the name.
And everyone in the room went silent.
Because the person who helped my grandfather hide Marcus wasn’t Frank.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t someone from the past.
It was the person who had raised me after my mother was gone.
My aunt.
The woman who had always said she loved me.
The woman who had spent years telling me my family had no secrets.
Evelyn Carter looked at the photograph.
Then she whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I stared at her.
“You know her?””
Evelyn’s face turned pale.
“Yes.””
“Who is she?””
Evelyn looked at me with tears in her eyes.
And then she said the one thing I never expected.
“Sarah… she was your mother’s closest friend.””
May you like
A pause.
“Before she became your aunt.””
