Chapter 10: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Frank stood outside Daniel’s house with rain dripping from his coat.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The man I had worked beside for years looked like a stranger.

The same man who had poured coffee for truck drivers.

The same man who complained about broken equipment and rising costs.

The same man who had once told me a hungry child wasn’t my responsibility.

Now he stood in front of me with seventeen years of secrets behind his eyes.

Marcus stepped between us.

“What are you doing here?””

Frank looked at him.

“I came to stop you from making a mistake.””

Marcus laughed.

“A mistake?””

Frank’s jaw tightened.

“You think you understand what happened.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice became sharper.

“You found pieces of a story and decided you knew the whole thing.””

I stepped forward.

“Then tell us the whole thing.””

Frank looked at me.

For the first time in my life, he looked afraid.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re worried about me.””

His expression changed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words made my stomach turn.

Everyone had said that.

My grandfather.

My mother’s family.

Now Frank.

Everyone used protection as an excuse for control.

“Protect me from what?”” I asked.

Frank looked away.

“From the truth.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“The truth that you helped steal my life?””

Frank flinched.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“Then explain the documents.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Marcus saw it too.

“You knew.””

Frank closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

I felt my chest tighten.

“You knew who he was?””

Frank nodded slowly.

“I knew about Marcus.””

“Since when?””

“Since before you met him.””

The rain sounded louder.

I felt like I was falling backward through time.

The night behind the diner.

The snow.

The sandwich.

Frank standing in my way.

He wasn’t just being cruel.

He knew.

“You knew that boy needed help.””

Frank looked at me.

“Yes.””

“And you still told me not to feed him?””

His face changed.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

He stepped inside when Daniel opened the door wider.

Not because he was invited.

Because everyone was too shocked to stop him.

“My entire life, I watched people make decisions that destroyed others.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Your grandfather wasn’t the only one.””

Marcus stared.

“Who else?””

Frank looked at the floor.

“Me.””

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

“I worked for Richard Mitchell.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Frank nodded.

“Before the diner, I worked at his company.””

The room became silent.

“I was young. Ambitious. I thought I was helping a powerful man build something.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“You helped him.””

Frank swallowed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Frank looked at him.

“I handled paperwork.””

My hands curled into fists.

“The adoption documents?””

Frank nodded.

“I didn’t know everything at first.””

“Then when did you find out?””

Frank looked at me.

“The night you gave Marcus that sandwich.””

The words cut through the room.

I stared.

“That night?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because Richard came to the diner looking for him.””

Marcus went still.

Frank continued.

“He was furious.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus had escaped.””

I frowned.

“Escaped?””

Frank nodded.

“Richard never intended for him to live on his own. He had arranged for him to be moved somewhere else.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Where?””

Frank hesitated.

“A facility.””

The word made everyone uncomfortable.

“What kind of facility?””

Frank looked at Marcus.

“One where nobody would ask questions.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked like he had stopped breathing.

I understood then.

The truth wasn’t just that Marcus had been abandoned.

He had been deliberately erased.

Frank rubbed his face.

“I saw you give him that sandwich.””

He looked at me.

“You were the only person who treated him like he mattered.””

I remembered.

The scared boy.

The receipt.

The promise.

Frank’s voice became quieter.

“And I hated myself for not stopping what was happening.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why did you keep silent?””

Frank looked at him.

“Because Richard threatened everyone.””

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Especially Sarah.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

Frank nodded.

“He knew you cared.””

I felt sick.

“Why would he care about me?””

Frank looked at the documents on the table.

“Because you were the reason Marcus was found.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Frank took a deep breath.

“Richard believed kindness was dangerous.””

The words sounded insane.

But somehow, after everything, they made sense.

“He said if Marcus ever learned someone cared about him, he would start searching for the truth.””

Marcus looked at me.

“And he was right.””

Frank nodded.

“You were the beginning of the end for Richard’s lie.””

Then Frank reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recording device.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would need proof.””

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

Frank looked at me.

“Everything your grandfather said the night he admitted what he did.””

My hands shook.

Frank pressed a button.

And the voice that came from the device belonged to the man I thought I knew.

Richard Mitchell.

The first words we heard were:

“If Sarah ever finds out who Marcus really is, everything we built will collapse.””
