Chapter 3: The Husband’s Forgotten Lie

I spent the next hour replaying Ava’s words.

My husband.

Daniel.

The man who held my hand during the trial.

The man who cried when the judge announced my sentence.

The man who promised he would find the truth.

My hands shook.

Because suddenly, I remembered something strange.

The night Lily vanished, Daniel had not been home.

He told me he was working late.

I believed him.

I had no reason not to.

Until now.

Ava had just planted a question in my mind.

And questions were dangerous.

Especially when they started making sense.

That afternoon, Ruth found me near the library.

She looked nervous.

“You spoke to Ava.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

I hesitated.

Then I told her.

Ruth closed her eyes.

“She’s trying to break you.””

“Is she lying?””

Ruth didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Ruth.””

She looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

She sat down.

“Your husband visited Ava’s family before the trial.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“I saw him.””

“When?””

“The week after Lily disappeared.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“No.””

Ruth looked at me sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

“You’re wrong.””

“I wish I was.””

I stood up.

“Why would Daniel do that?””

Ruth lowered her voice.

“Because sometimes people protect the person who gives them power.””

That night, I demanded my prison file.

Every inmate had one.

Every secret.

Every accusation.

Every lie written down by someone who never knew them.

The guard brought it the next morning.

I flipped through the pages.

Most of it was familiar.

Arrest report.

Court documents.

Witness statements.

Then I saw a name.

Daniel Carter.

My husband.

There was a statement from him.

I read the first line.

My hands went numb.

“My wife became obsessed with finding Lily and started acting irrationally.””

I stopped breathing.

He had said that.

About me.

The man who promised he believed me had helped convince the world I was guilty.

I kept reading.

“He often feared for his daughter’s safety.””

Daughter.

Not our daughter.

His words.

Like Lily belonged to him alone.

I closed the file.

A sound escaped my throat.

Not crying.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

A shadow moved near the doorway.

Ava.

I looked up.

“Did you know?””

She stood there silently.

“Did you know my husband helped you?””

Ava didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked toward her.

“You ruined my life.””

Her face hardened.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Ava looked around to make sure nobody was listening.

“My family didn’t take Lily.””

I froze.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“Your husband did.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“No.””

“He made a deal.””

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

I shook my head.

“Why would he do that?””

Ava looked at the floor.

“Because Daniel wasn’t trying to save Lily.””

She looked back at me.

“He was trying to save himself.””

Before I could answer, the prison alarm suddenly screamed.

Guards rushed down the hallway.

Doors slammed open and closed.

Everyone started shouting.

Then one guard ran toward us.

“Ruth Bell!””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

The guard looked at me.

“She was found unconscious in her cell.””

Ava grabbed my arm.

And for the first time since I met her, her voice sounded afraid.

“They know she talked.””

I stared down the hallway.

Because I finally understood.

I wasn’t the only person trapped in this prison.

Someone outside was still controlling the game.

And they had just made their first move.
