Chapter 10: The Woman Who Survived the Secret
The first thing I noticed about Blackwood County Medical Facility was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The dangerous kind.
Prison had noise everywhere.
Metal doors.
Footsteps.
Women shouting across hallways.
Blackwood was different.
Too clean.
Too controlled.
Like every sound had permission before it existed.
A guard escorted me through several locked doors until we reached a small hospital wing.
“Patient is in room 214,” he said.
I stopped walking.
“Just like that?””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“I get to see her?””
The guard shrugged.
“She requested you.””
That answer made my stomach tighten.
Someone who had survived being attacked.
Someone who knew the truth.
Someone who had been hidden away.
Wanted to see me.
The door opened.
And there she was.
Ruth.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
Her hair was thinner.
There were bruises along her face.
But her eyes were the same.
Strong.
Sharp.
Alive.
When she saw me, tears filled her eyes.
“Emily.””
I rushed forward.
For a moment, I forgot everything.
The prison.
The lies.
The betrayal.
I just hugged the woman who had risked everything for me.
“I thought you were dead.””
Ruth held onto me.
“They wanted you to think that.””
I pulled back.
“Who?””
She looked toward the door.
Then lowered her voice.
“Everyone connected to Richard Vale.””
I sat beside her.
“Tell me everything.””
Ruth took a slow breath.
“I found out what happened to Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“Where is she?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
Ruth looked at me.
“That’s complicated.””
I hated that word.
Complicated.
It was what people said when the truth was too painful.
“Ruth.””
She reached for my hand.
“She’s been moved many times.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“You.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
Ruth nodded.
“He knew if you ever found proof, you would destroy everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Me? I spent years trying to convince people I wasn’t guilty.””
“And you never stopped.””
That hit harder than I expected.
Ruth looked at the floor.
“Richard underestimated mothers.””
I swallowed.
“What happened the night Lily disappeared?””
Ruth closed her eyes.
“I was there.””
The room seemed to freeze.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her face broke.
“Because Daniel made me promise.””
I stared.
“Daniel?””
“He told me if I spoke, Lily would die.””
My chest tightened.
“He threatened you?””
“He showed me proof.””
“What proof?””
Ruth looked terrified.
“That Richard wasn’t just hiding Lily.””
She paused.
“He was hiding children.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
Ruth gripped my hand.
“Richard had been taking children from families who trusted him.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Control.””
Her voice shook.
“He believed people were easier to manipulate when they had something to lose.””
I thought about Daniel.
Ava.
Myself.
Everyone had been trapped by fear.
“Lily found out.””
Ruth nodded.
“She saw him threatening another child.””
My stomach turned.
“She told Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
Ruth looked away.
“He made a deal.””
My eyes filled with anger.
“What kind of deal?””
“He promised Richard he would help erase the evidence.””
The pain came back instantly.
My husband.
The man who held me while I cried.
The man who told me he would find our daughter.
“You’re saying Daniel chose him.””
Ruth was silent.
Then she whispered:
“At first.””
That word caught me.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“Because later, Daniel tried to undo it.””
I shook my head.
“Too late.””
“Yes.””
Ruth looked sad.
“Too late.””
The door suddenly opened.
A nurse entered.
“Visiting time is over.””
“No,” I said.
“I need more time.””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry.””
Ruth grabbed my hand before I stood.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She reached under her pillow and pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this hidden.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Ruth.
From Lily.
My hands began shaking before I even read it.
Mom,
I don’t know if you will ever see this.
But I need you to know something.
I never believed the things they said about you.
I knew you loved me.
I knew you were looking for me.
I read the words again and again.
Then I saw the last line.
Mom, if you find this, don’t trust the person who brings you to me.
My breathing stopped.
I looked at Ruth.
“What does this mean?””
Ruth’s face went pale.
“Because whoever finds Lily first…”
She looked toward the door.
“May not be trying to save her.””
The hallway lights suddenly flickered.
A guard rushed past outside.
Then another.
Something was happening.
Ruth grabbed my arm.
“Emily.””
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“Daniel isn’t the only one who escaped.””
I stared at her.
“Who else?””
May you like
Ruth looked terrified.
“Richard Vale.””
