Chapter 13: The Truth Ruth Buried
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not Ava.
Not even Richard.
The only sound was the wind moving through the dead grass around Blackwood Farm.
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The little girl I had searched for.
The little girl I had cried over every night.
And I saw fear in her eyes.
Not confusion.
Not uncertainty.
Fear.
“Lily,” I whispered.
“What did you say?””
Her lips trembled.
“Mom…”
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
Agent Hayes stepped forward.
“Richard, stay where you are.””
But he ignored her.
He looked at Lily.
“You spent years trying to forget.””
Lily flinched.
I immediately moved between them.
“Don’t talk to her.””
Richard laughed.
“You still think you understand what happened.””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“I know one thing.””
“What?””
“You took my daughter.””
His smile faded slightly.
“Did I?””
The question hit me.
Because that was exactly how Richard operated.
He twisted everything.
Made monsters look like victims.
Made victims look guilty.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Mom, he’s lying.””
I looked down.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was little.””
“I know.””
“I didn’t understand everything.””
“That’s okay.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I need you to know.””
The entire world seemed to disappear.
“My grandfather didn’t take me alone.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
For the first time, I saw anger in her.
“You told me she abandoned me.””
Richard said nothing.
“You told me my mom didn’t want me.””
My chest broke.
Lily looked at me.
“But I never believed you.””
I covered my mouth.
She continued.
“Ruth helped him.””
Ava stepped closer.
“Why?””
Lily looked at her.
“Because Grandpa had something on her.””
Richard smiled.
“Careful.””
Lily ignored him.
“He threatened her son.””
Everyone went still.
Ruth’s son.
The secret she had carried.
The reason she was afraid.
“She didn’t want to help him,” Lily said.
“She was scared.””
I looked at Richard.
“So you controlled her too.””
Richard smiled.
“Everyone has a weakness.””
I felt sick.
“You destroyed everyone around you.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I revealed who people really were.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re done, Richard.””
Richard laughed.
“Are you sure?””
He reached into his coat.
Agent Hayes raised her weapon.
“Don’t move.””
Richard stopped.
But his smile remained.
“You think arresting me fixes this?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew it didn’t.
The damage was already done.
Lily squeezed my hand.
“Mom.””
I looked at her.
“There’s something else.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She looked toward the farmhouse.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“A room.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“What room?””
Lily saw it.
“You’re afraid.””
For the first time, Richard looked angry.
“Lily.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You told me nobody would ever find it.””
Agent Hayes looked at me.
“What room?””
Lily pointed toward the farmhouse.
“Under the basement.””
Everyone turned.
Richard suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He pushed past the nearest officer and ran toward the house.
Agent Hayes shouted.
“Stop!””
Daniel chased after him.
Ava followed.
I stayed with Lily.
Because I wasn’t losing her again.
Minutes later, the basement door was opened.
Inside was a hidden room.
And what we found there explained everything.
Boxes.
Files.
Photographs.
Names.
Hundreds of them.
Children.
Families.
People Richard had controlled.
Agent Hayes opened one file.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“This is why he was afraid.””
I stepped closer.
Inside the folder was my name.
My daughter’s name.
And one final document.
A confession.
Signed by Daniel.
But the date was impossible.
It was dated three years after my trial.
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I didn’t write that.””
Richard smiled from the doorway.
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
He was surrounded by officers now.
But he looked calm.
“Because Daniel was never the mastermind.””
I stared.
“Then who was?””
Richard looked directly at me.
And said:
“The person who helped me create the entire story.””
A silence filled the room.
Richard’s eyes moved toward the hallway.
May you like
Toward the person standing behind us.
“Ask Ava.””
