Chapter 12: The Deal Made Before I Was Born
Rebecca invited us inside.
I don’t remember walking through the doorway.
I only remember sitting down at a table across from the woman who had given me life.
The woman who had been a stranger five minutes earlier.
The woman who somehow knew every detail about my face.
“You look like your father,” she whispered.
I stiffened.
“Which father?””
She looked down.
“I know this is confusing.””
“That’s an understatement.””
Madison sat quietly beside me.
For once, she wasn’t trying to compete.
She was listening.
Rebecca folded her hands.
“Your grandmother found me when I was sixteen.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she knew I was struggling.””
I waited.
“She knew I couldn’t take care of a baby.””
My chest tightened.
“So she took me?””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She convinced me.””
“Convinced you to give me away?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“She told me you would have a better life.””
I looked away.
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“No.””
Her answer surprised me.
“It doesn’t.””
She didn’t make excuses.
She didn’t blame anyone else.
“I regret it every day.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie would have.
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
Rebecca looked at the floor.
“Because your grandmother made sure I couldn’t.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“She paid for my relocation. She changed my name. She told me if I tried to contact you, she would take legal action.””
Madison looked shocked.
“Why would she do that?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because she wanted to protect the family name.””
My stomach turned.
The same grandmother everyone described as loving.
The same woman whose house was supposed to represent family.
Had hidden my entire existence.
“Did Dad know?””
Rebecca’s eyes softened.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“No.””
She nodded slowly.
“He found out later.””
I stood.
“He knew?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Not at first.””
I looked toward Madison.
Then back at her.
“Tell me everything.””
Rebecca took a deep breath.
“Your grandmother told John that you were abandoned.””
My eyes filled.
“She lied?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted John and Elizabeth to raise you.””
The room spun.
“So my parents weren’t bad people.””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“They loved you.””
I sat back down.
Everything I had believed was breaking apart.
Then Rebecca reached into a drawer.
She pulled out a small box.
“I kept this for you.””
Inside was a bracelet.
Tiny.
Pink.
With a small engraved heart.
My breath caught.
“I gave this to you the day you were born.””
I touched it.
My fingers trembled.
“How did you keep it?””
“Because I never stopped hoping.””
For the first time, I saw her not as the person who left me.
But as someone who had lost me.
Then Madison’s phone rang.
She looked down.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then she stood.
“What do you mean she’s gone?””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Madison looked at me.
“The old house.””
“What?””
She swallowed.
“The property records changed.””
Dad’s voice came from behind us.
We all turned.
He was standing in the doorway.
I hadn’t heard him arrive.
His face was pale.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He looked at the bracelet in my hand.
Then at Rebecca.
And whispered:
“Your grandmother didn’t just hide your past.””
May you like
He took a breath.
“She left behind a secret that could destroy everything she built.””
