Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew My Name
I stared at Madison’s message until the screen went dark.
The woman in the photograph looked ordinary.
That somehow made it worse.
I expected someone who looked dangerous.
Someone who looked like a villain.
Instead, I saw a woman standing in front of a small house with flowers near the porch.
Someone who could have been anyone.
Someone who could have been my mother.
“Emma?””
Dad’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
“Madison found her.””
His face changed.
“Found who?””
I showed him the picture.
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Daniel looked away.
“She wasn’t supposed to be found.””
I turned toward him.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel sighed.
“Your biological mother disappeared after the adoption.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered immediately.
That was becoming the most terrifying pattern of my life.
Finally, Dad spoke.
“She was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He looked at the photograph.
“She was scared.””
I felt anger rising.
“She left me.””
Dad shook his head.
“We don’t know the whole story.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Funny. Everyone keeps saying that.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“Where are you going?””
“To meet her.””
Dad stood.
“Emma, wait.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I spent my entire life hearing pieces of my own story from other people.””
I looked at him.
“I’m done waiting.””
Two hours later, I stood outside the house from the photograph.
Madison was already there.
She looked nervous.
Not arrogant.
Not angry.
Just nervous.
“You came.””
I stared at her.
“You knew.””
She looked down.
“I knew she existed.””
“For how long?””
“A few weeks.””
I felt my anger return.
“You found my biological mother and said nothing?””
She swallowed.
“I was trying to understand it.””
“By destroying my graduation?””
Her face fell.
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
“I know I messed up.””
I looked at her.
That was the first honest thing she had said to me in years.
Before I could respond, the front door opened.
A woman stood there.
Older than my mother would have been in my memories.
But her eyes…
Her eyes looked exactly like mine.
She looked at me.
Then at Madison.
Then she covered her mouth.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
“Emma?””
My heart stopped.
Nobody had ever said my name like that.
Like they had been waiting years to say it.
I couldn’t speak.
She stepped forward slowly.
“I thought I would never see you.””
I felt tears forming.
“Who are you?””
Her face broke.
“I’m Rebecca.””
The name felt unreal.
“My biological mother.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I wanted to hate her.
I wanted to ask why.
Why she left.
Why she never looked for me.
Why everyone else had to carry her secret.
But when I opened my mouth, the only thing that came out was:
“Why?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“I didn’t abandon you.””
I froze.
“What?””
She stepped outside.
“I need you to hear the truth.””
Madison stood beside me.
Even she looked shocked.
Rebecca continued.
“When you were born, I loved you.””
“Then why wasn’t I with you?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because someone took you from me.””
The world went quiet.
“What?””
She looked toward the road.
“Your adoptive parents weren’t the ones who found you.””
I felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Your grandmother did.””
I stared.
“My grandmother?””
She nodded.
“She made a deal.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“What kind of deal?””
May you like
Rebecca looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“The kind that changed all of our lives.””
