Chapter 7: The Badge That Should Not Exist

The room went silent after Captain Williams said my father's name.

Not a normal silence.

The kind of silence that happens when reality breaks apart and nobody knows what pieces are still real.

I stared at the screen in his hand.

The security image was blurry, but the details were impossible to ignore.

The officer walking beside my uncle wore an airport police uniform.

And the badge number belonged to Daniel Mitchell.

My father.

The man who had supposedly died twenty-six years ago.

"No," I whispered.

My mother covered her mouth.

"Sarah...""

I looked at her.

"You knew.""

She shook her head quickly.

"No.""

"You knew something.""

"I knew he was alive.""

The words hit harder than anything else.

I stepped backward.

My own mother had just confirmed the impossible.

"You knew my father was alive?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I suspected.""

"You suspected?""

My voice rose.

"Mom, I spent my entire life believing he left me.""

"He never left you.""

"Then why didn't he come back?""

She looked away.

Because she didn't have an answer.

Captain Williams lowered his weapon.

"Everyone needs to calm down.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't tell me to calm down.""

My voice shook.

"I was arrested. Humiliated. Accused of stealing my own passport.

I found out my father might be alive. My uncle might be alive. And everyone around me knew pieces of this except me.""

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue.

Then Harris stepped forward.

"I can explain.""

I looked at him.

"You?""

His face was different now.

Less like a criminal.

More like someone who had been carrying a burden for years.

"Your father wasn't killed in an accident.""

"I know.""

"He disappeared.""

"Why?""

Harris looked at the photograph.

"Because he discovered the truth.""

"About what?""

He glanced at Captain Williams.

"The people closest to him.""

Williams immediately stiffened.

"Choose your next words carefully.""

Harris ignored him.

"Daniel found out someone inside the department was helping criminals erase identities.""

My stomach tightened.

"Fake passports.""

Harris nodded.

"Fake deaths. Fake records. New names.""

I thought about my passport.

The stolen report.

The timing.

"They used my identity.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because someone wanted to see if you were still protected.""

The room became cold.

"Protected by who?""

Harris looked at my mother.

Then at Williams.

Then finally at me.

"Your father.""

I laughed bitterly.

"My father has been gone for twenty-six years.""

Harris shook his head.

"No.""

He pointed at the screen.

"He has been watching.""

I felt my heart race.

"Watching me?""

"Watching everyone.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Michael, stop.""

Harris looked at her.

"You still defend him.""

"No.""

Her voice hardened.

"I'm protecting my daughter from another lie.""

That surprised him.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Harris said something that changed everything.

"Sarah, your father didn't leave because he wanted to.""

I looked at him.

"Then why?""

"Because someone threatened you.""

My breath caught.

"What?""

Harris nodded.

"When Daniel found the list, he learned that people would do anything to get it.""

"What list?""

"The list your father hid.""

Captain Williams held up the papers.

"The names.""

Harris looked at them.

"Those are only part of it.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Where is the rest?""

Harris looked at me.

"Your father gave it to you.""

I frowned.

"I never had anything.""

"Yes, you did.""

"No.""

"Sarah, think.""

I searched my memory.

Every birthday.

Every box from my childhood.

Every item my mother saved.

Then I remembered.

A small wooden music box.

My father had given it to me before he disappeared.

I hadn't seen it in years.

"Where is it?""

My mother looked shocked.

"What?""

"The music box.""

She went pale.

"Sarah...""

"Where is it?""

Her silence answered.

I turned away.

"You have it.""

She nodded slowly.

"I kept it hidden.""

"Why?""

"Because your father told me never to open it.""

Captain Williams stepped closer.

"What was inside?""

My mother whispered:

"I don't know.""

Harris laughed quietly.

"That's because Daniel knew exactly what would happen if the wrong person found it.""

A sound came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Captain Williams moved toward the window.

His face changed.

More officers had arrived.

But something was wrong.

"Who called them?""

Nobody answered.

Then his radio crackled.

A voice came through.

"Captain Williams.""

Everyone froze.

The voice was calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

My mother's face went white.

"Daniel.""

Captain Williams grabbed the radio.

"Daniel Mitchell?""

A pause.

Then:

"Richard.""

My knees nearly gave out.

My father was speaking.

Alive.

After twenty-six years.

Captain Williams looked at me.

Then he slowly handed me the radio.

"Sarah...""

My fingers trembled as I took it.

"Dad?""

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Broken.

But unmistakably familiar.

"Sarah.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Is it really you?""

A long pause.

Then he whispered:

"I've waited so long to hear your voice.""

Tears filled my eyes.

"Why did you leave me?""

The silence afterward hurt more than any answer.

Finally, he said:

"Because the person who tried to kill me was standing next to you.""

I looked around the room.

At my mother.

At Captain Williams.

At Harris.

May you like

Then my father said the words that made everyone freeze.

"Sarah, you need to get away from Captain Williams.""
