Chapter 13: The Woman Who Wore My Mother’s Face

Nobody moved.

The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like my mother.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

Same small scar near her eyebrow.

But my mother was standing beside me.

Terrified.

The stranger smiled.

"Hello, Sarah.""

I couldn't speak.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Captain Williams slowly raised his weapon.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked at him.

"Richard. Still protecting her?""

My mother's face turned white.

"No.""

The stranger looked at her.

"Hello, Evelyn.""

My mother stepped backward.

"You're dead.""

The woman smiled.

"So is Daniel.""

My father moved in front of me.

"No.""

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the warning inside it.

"You're not taking my daughter.""

The woman tilted her head.

"You always were dramatic, Daniel.""

My heart pounded.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked at me.

For the first time, her expression softened.

"I was your mother's sister.""

The room went silent.

"My aunt?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Sarah...""

I turned toward her.

"You knew?""

She nodded slowly.

"Her name was Claire.""

The woman smiled.

"Was?""

She stepped inside.

"I prefer to think of myself as someone who survived.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You created the network.""

Claire looked almost amused.

"You finally figured it out.""

My hands tightened.

"What network?""

"The one your grandfather started.""

I felt sick.

"My grandfather?""

Claire nodded.

"Your grandfather was a brilliant man.""

"He was a criminal.""

"He was a visionary.""

The hatred in her voice was calm.

Controlled.

That scared me more than anger.

Daniel stepped forward.

"He destroyed people's lives.""

Claire looked at him.

"And you exposed him.""

"Yes.""

"Which is why everyone you loved became a target.""

I looked at my father.

The pain on his face confirmed it.

"You knew she was alive?""

Daniel nodded.

"I suspected.""

I almost laughed.

Again.

That word.

Suspected.

Everyone suspected.

Nobody told me.

Claire looked around the room.

"So many reunions.""

Her eyes landed on Emily.

"Even you.""

Emily stared at her.

"You ruined my life.""

Claire shrugged.

"You disappeared willingly.""

"Because you threatened my family.""

"And it worked.""

Harris moved forward.

"You made me think my wife was dead.""

Claire looked at him.

"Yes.""

His face changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Devastation.

"Why?""

"Because you were loyal to the wrong people.""

Harris shook his head.

"I loved her.""

Claire smiled coldly.

"That was your weakness.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire reached into her coat.

Everyone raised their weapons.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"This is why I came.""

Daniel immediately reacted.

"Don't.""

Claire looked at him.

"You know what it is.""

My father went pale.

"What is it?""

Claire held the envelope.

"The final file.""

Captain Williams frowned.

"The one missing from the list?""

Claire nodded.

"The one Daniel spent twenty-six years hiding.""

I looked at my father.

"What is she talking about?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Sarah...""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"Tell me.""

He hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt.

"Your name.""

I froze.

"My name?""

Claire smiled.

"Your father wasn't protecting you from the network.""

She looked at Daniel.

"He was protecting the network from you.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

Daniel looked devastated.

"That's not true.""

Claire opened the envelope.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

But not mine.

Someone else's.

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

Then stopped.

Because the name on the paper was impossible.

Sarah Mitchell.

Same name.

Same birthday.

But the parents were different.

"What is this?""

My mother started crying.

Daniel whispered:

"The truth.""

I looked at him.

"Am I not your daughter?""

The question broke him.

"You are.""

"Then why?""

He looked at Claire.

"Because someone changed the records.""

Claire smiled.

"Exactly.""

She stepped closer.

"Sarah, your entire identity was created.""

My heart raced.

"No.""

"Your birth certificate.""

She pointed at the paper.

"Your passport.""

"Your childhood records.""

"All changed.""

I looked at my father.

"Why?""

He whispered:

"Because you were the evidence.""

The room went silent.

"The evidence of what?""

Daniel looked at me.

"That your grandfather had a child who survived.""

My breath caught.

"What?""

Claire smiled.

"Your real father wasn't Daniel.""

Everyone froze.

Daniel closed his eyes.

May you like

And I heard him whisper the sentence that destroyed everything.

"I adopted you to save you.""
