Chapter 12: The Father I Never Knew

The recording ended.

But nobody spoke.

The sentence stayed in the air.

The man you called your grandfather wasn't your grandfather.

My entire understanding of my family collapsed again.

I looked at my mother.

She looked devastated.

"You knew.""

She shook her head.

"Not everything.""

"But something.""

She looked away.

That was enough.

I turned toward her.

"How many more secrets?""

Her eyes filled.

"I was trying to protect you.""

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that.""

I picked up the wooden box.

"Everyone protects me by lying to me.""

Emily stepped forward.

"Sarah.""

I looked at her.

"Your mother was afraid.""

"So was I.""

My voice broke.

"I was six years old when my father disappeared.""

Emily lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You don't.""

I pointed at the room.

"None of you do.""

The anger that had lived inside me for decades finally came out.

"I grew up thinking my father didn't love me enough to stay.""

My mother cried quietly.

"I thought I wasn't important enough for him to come back.""

Nobody interrupted.

"Do you know what that does to a child?""

My voice softened.

"Do you know how many birthdays I wondered if he remembered me?""

My mother covered her face.

"He remembered every one.""

The voice came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a small folder.

My heart stopped.

I knew him before I knew why.

The shape of his face.

The way he stood.

The familiar sadness in his eyes.

"Dad?""

No one breathed.

Daniel Mitchell looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

"Sarah.""

Twenty-six years.

Gone.

Just like that.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

Then anger came.

Not happiness.

Not immediately.

Anger.

"You were alive.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

"You watched me grow up?""

His face broke.

"From far away.""

"Why?""

He stepped closer.

"Because if I came back, they would have killed you.""

I shook my head.

"I needed my father.""

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You missed everything.""

He looked down.

"I know.""

"Graduations.""

"I know.""

"My wedding.""

"I know.""

"My daughter.""

His eyes moved to Lily.

And his expression changed.

A grandfather seeing his granddaughter for the first time.

"I know.""

That hurt more.

Because he had known.

He had been there.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Daniel looked at Lily.

"You're beautiful.""

She hid behind me.

"Are you really my grandpa?""

He nodded.

"I am.""

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

"Mommy said you were dead.""

My father closed his eyes.

"I know.""

The pain on his face was unbearable.

Captain Williams stepped forward.

"Daniel.""

My father looked at him.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Daniel said:

"You failed me.""

Williams nodded.

"I know.""

"But you saved my daughter.""

Williams looked at me.

"I tried.""

My father looked at the others.

"Now everyone needs to listen.""

He placed the folder on the table.

"This ends tonight.""

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Names.

The complete list.

"The network.""

Daniel nodded.

"Everyone involved.""

I looked at the names.

Then stopped.

One name was circled.

My own name.

"Why is my name here?""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Because you were never the target.""

I looked up.

"What?""

He pointed to the list.

"Sarah, they didn't create a fake passport to stop you from traveling.""

"Then why?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"They wanted you to come to Atlanta.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

Daniel looked toward the window.

Because outside, a car had just stopped.

The same black vehicle from before.

My father whispered:

"Because the person who ordered your arrest is here.""

The front door opened.

A familiar voice spoke.

"Hello, Sarah.""

Everyone turned.

And I felt the blood leave my face.

Because the person standing there was someone I had trusted my entire life.

Someone who had held me when I cried.

Someone who had told me my father was dead.

My mother whispered the name.

"Evelyn.""

May you like

But my mother was standing beside me.

So who was the woman at the door?
