Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For a moment, nobody understood what Richard had said.

Then everyone did.

And the room changed.

My father.

Michael Brooks.

Dead for seventeen years.

But someone had walked into my hotel.

Someone had used security access.

Someone had asked for me.

Using his name.

“That’s impossible,” Thomas whispered.

The irony almost made me laugh.

Because everyone had been saying that word all night.

Impossible.

My mother being alive.

My father’s secrets.

My uncle’s betrayal.

And now this.

I looked at Richard.

“Where is he?””

Richard hesitated.

“Lobby security is tracking him.””

“Take me there.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, wait.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if that really is him…”

She couldn’t finish.

But I understood.

If my father was alive, everything changed.

The years of grief.

The funeral.

The memories.

All of it.

We rushed upstairs.

The elevator ride felt endless.

Lily held my hand tightly.

She didn’t ask questions anymore.

Children know when adults are scared.

When the elevator doors opened, the lobby was empty.

Almost.

Guests had been moved away from the center.

Security guards stood near the entrance.

And there was a man standing beneath the chandelier.

His back was toward us.

Older.

Taller.

Gray hair.

A dark coat.

My heart stopped before my mind could catch up.

Because I knew that silhouette.

I knew the way he stood.

The way he held his shoulders.

The way he looked at the world like he was carrying invisible weight.

“Dad?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

The man slowly turned.

And I forgot how to breathe.

It was him.

Not a memory.

Not a photograph.

Not a dream.

My father.

Michael Brooks.

Alive.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel.””

I couldn’t move.

For seventeen years, I had imagined this moment.

In every version, I ran to him.

I hugged him.

I cried.

But reality was different.

Reality was standing in front of me with too many questions.

“You’re alive.””

My father nodded.

“I am.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You let me bury you.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

“You let me believe I lost you.””

“I know.””

“You let me hate my mother.””

His eyes moved to Claire.

“I know.””

The anger inside me finally exploded.

“Then why?””

The entire lobby watched.

But I didn’t care.

“Why did you disappear?””

Michael looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“It’s the truth.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody tells me anything.””

He stopped.

And for the first time, I saw my father not as a powerful businessman.

But as a broken man.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

“I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

“But I never stopped loving you.””

Those words should have comforted me.

They didn’t.

Because love didn’t explain seventeen years.

Love didn’t explain a fake death.

Love didn’t explain a child growing up without his parents.

Richard approached carefully.

“Michael…”

My father looked at him.

“Richard.””

They exchanged a look.

One full of years of secrets.

Then Michael turned to me.

“Your uncle told you?””

I looked at Thomas.

He had followed us upstairs.

“No.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Then we’re out of time.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the entrance.

“Because the person who tried to destroy our family knows I’m back.””

The glass doors suddenly shattered.

Everyone screamed.

A figure outside ran into the storm.

Security rushed forward.

But before anyone could catch them, they threw something onto the marble floor.

A small envelope.

My father picked it up.

The moment he saw the handwriting, his face changed.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He opened it.

Read one line.

Then looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Daniel… your daughter was never supposed to be here tonight.””
