Chapter 13: The Child Who Held the Secret

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes before something breaks.

I stared at my mother.

“What did you just say?””

Claire looked like she had been holding those words inside for seventeen years.

“The night of the crash…”

Her voice trembled.

“You weren’t supposed to survive either.””

The world seemed to tilt.

I looked at Michael.

My father looked away.

And that was the moment I understood.

They weren’t hiding one tragedy.

They were hiding two.

“Explain.””

My voice was barely controlled.

Claire sat down slowly.

“Your father’s car was supposed to be empty when it crashed.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Michael stepped closer.

“Victor’s people believed you were with me.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“They were going to kill me?””

“Yes.””

“And me?””

Michael nodded.

“They thought eliminating our family would end the ownership line.””

I looked at the document in my hand.

The fake inheritance removal.

The hidden files.

The secrets.

Everything connected.

“But I survived.””

“Yes.””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“You were found near the crash site.””

“I don’t remember.””

“You were unconscious.””

Claire touched her hand to her chest.

“You had a head injury.””

I stared at her.

“So what happened?””

Michael answered.

“You woke up in the hospital three days later.””

“And?””

“You asked for me.””

The pain in his voice was obvious.

“I was standing outside the room.””

I froze.

“You were there?””

He nodded.

“I wanted to run inside.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because Victor had people watching the hospital.””

My father looked down.

“If he knew you survived, you would never be safe.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“So you left me.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more.

“But not because I wanted to.””

I looked at Claire.

“And Mom?””

She wiped away tears.

“I took you away from the city.””

“Without telling me why.””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me my father was alive.””

“Yes.””

Every answer felt like another wound.

But then I remembered something.

The document.

“The inheritance papers.””

Everyone became serious again.

Michael took the document from me.

“This isn’t my signature.””

I looked at him.

“You’re sure?””

“I wrote my name thousands of times.””

He examined it carefully.

“This is a copy.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Someone created this to challenge Daniel’s ownership.””

Sophia nodded.

“Victor.””

Thomas looked angry.

“He’s trying to take control legally.””

Michael looked at me.

“Because the board will question your authority.””

I understood.

Victor didn’t need to destroy us physically anymore.

He could destroy us publicly.

Through courts.

Through rumors.

Through paperwork.

Sophia pulled out another folder.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at her.

“My father prepared for this.””

She placed documents on the table.

“He knew Daniel would return someday.””

Inside were plans.

Legal strategies.

Ownership transfers.

Even newspaper drafts.

I looked at her.

“How did you get these?””

She hesitated.

“I stole them.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas almost smiled.

“You really are his daughter.””

Sophia ignored him.

“I found them after I realized what my father did.””

I looked at her.

“Why help me?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because I know what it feels like to grow up loving someone who doesn’t deserve it.””

That answer stayed with me.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone became tense.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Daniel Brooks.””

“Who is this?””

“You want your company?””

I said nothing.

“You want your family’s name cleared?””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows what happened the night your father died.””

My heart stopped.

“Where are you?””

The caller laughed softly.

“Where this started.””

The line went dead.

I looked at everyone.

Richard asked:

“What did they say?””

I stared toward the hotel windows.

Outside, the storm was getting worse.

“They want me to come to the old Brooks estate.””

Michael immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

May you like

His face turned pale.

“Because nobody has been there since the night your family was destroyed.””
