Chapter 11: The Man Everyone Trusted

Victor Hale entered the hotel like he owned it.

Maybe that was the most terrifying part.

He wasn’t hiding.

He wasn’t running.

He walked through the lobby calmly while dozens of employees watched him.

The same employees who probably admired him.

The same people who had seen his face on magazine covers.

He looked exactly like the kind of man nobody would suspect.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Perfect confidence.

But now I knew what was behind it.

He stopped beneath the chandelier.

Then looked directly at me.

“Daniel Brooks.””

My father stepped forward.

“Victor.””

Victor smiled.

“Michael.””

The way he said my father’s name was almost friendly.

Almost.

“You look better than I expected.””

Michael’s eyes were cold.

“You should be in prison.””

Victor laughed.

“Still dramatic after all these years.””

I stepped between them.

“You tried to kill my father.””

Victor looked at me.

Then smiled.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

His answer shocked me.

“Anger makes people easier to control.””

My hands tightened.

Sophia stepped beside me.

“Dad.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“Don’t call me that.””

The words hurt her.

I noticed.

Even after everything, she was still his daughter.

“Why are you here?”” Michael asked.

Victor looked around.

“This hotel.””

He smiled.

“Your father’s greatest achievement.””

Then he looked at me.

“And now yours.””

“I’m not interested.””

“You will be.””

He walked closer.

“Because you don’t understand what you inherited.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Victor glanced at Thomas.

“Ask your uncle.””

Everyone turned.

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“What?””

Victor laughed.

“You never told him?””

“Told me what?””

Thomas stayed silent.

My patience disappeared.

“Tell me.””

Thomas looked at Michael.

My father nodded.

“Daniel deserves the truth.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your father didn’t build the hotel alone.””

I waited.

“He built it with Victor.””

The revelation hit me.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“Your father and I were partners.””

Michael looked disgusted.

“Partners until you betrayed everyone.””

Victor ignored him.

“Brooks Enterprises was built on both our visions.””

“Then why destroy it?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because your father forgot something important.””

“What?””

“He believed loyalty mattered more than power.””

Nobody spoke.

Victor continued.

“I learned early that loyalty is something people talk about when they have nothing else.””

Sophia looked disgusted.

“You ruined your own family.””

Victor looked at her.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You sacrificed everyone else.””

For the first time, Victor looked at his daughter.

And there was something strange there.

Not regret.

Disappointment.

“You chose them.””

Sophia shook her head.

“I chose the truth.””

Victor looked back at me.

“You see?””

He pointed at Sophia.

“Even my own daughter betrayed me.””

I stared at him.

“She didn’t betray you.””

I stepped forward.

“She stopped protecting you.””

That wiped the smile from his face.

For a moment, the powerful businessman disappeared.

A bitter man stood there instead.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And smiled.

“Perfect.””

Michael immediately noticed.

“What did you do?””

Victor put his phone away.

“I made sure Daniel understands his position.””

“What position?””

Victor looked at me.

“The position of a man who inherited a company everyone wants.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor nodded toward the hotel entrance.

The doors opened.

Reporters flooded inside.

Cameras.

Microphones.

Questions.

Richard rushed forward.

“How did they get in?””

Victor smiled.

“Because someone gave them a story.””

A reporter shouted:

“Daniel Brooks! Is it true your family covered up your father’s disappearance?””

Another yelled:

“Did your mother fake her death?””

The lobby exploded.

My family’s secrets were suddenly public.

Victor stepped close enough for only me to hear.

“You wanted the truth.””

He smiled.

“Now everyone gets it.””

Then he whispered:

“But there’s one truth you haven’t discovered.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His smile returned.

“The reason your father disappeared…”

May you like

He paused.

“…was because of you.””
