Chapter 9: The Test That Changed Everything
The next morning, I sat in a small hospital office staring at paperwork.
The room smelled like disinfectant.
Cold.
Empty.
Like every place where people waited for answers they were afraid to hear.
Emma sat beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
A doctor placed a folder on the desk.
“I understand this is difficult.””
I nodded.
“Someone requested a paternity test.””
“Yes.””
The doctor looked between us.
“Because of the circumstances, we need everyone to understand the results may have legal consequences.””
I looked at Emma.
She looked exhausted.
“I know.””
The doctor opened the folder.
“The test has been completed.””
My heart started pounding.
For weeks, I thought I knew the biggest betrayal.
I thought it was the bathroom.
The messages.
The secrets.
But now I realized there was something worse.
Not knowing.
The doctor looked at the paper.
“Mr. Carter…”
A pause.
Then:
“The results confirm you are Noah’s biological father.””
I closed my eyes.
Relief hit me.
Not because I doubted Noah was mine.
But because I realized Ryan had been trying to take away the one thing I was protecting.
My son.
Emma started crying.
The doctor continued.
“However, there is another issue.””
I opened my eyes.
“What issue?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“The person who requested this test did not simply want confirmation.””
“What do you mean?””
“He also filed paperwork requesting temporary visitation.””
My stomach dropped.
“Already?””
The doctor nodded.
“Before the results were available.””
I looked at Emma.
“He planned this.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
Outside the office, I called my lawyer.
“We need protection immediately.””
“I expected this,” he said.
“You expected this?””
“Daniel, people like Ryan usually don’t appear after years unless they have a reason.””
I looked through the hospital window.
Emma was sitting alone.
Holding a picture of Noah.
“What reason?””
My lawyer lowered his voice.
“You need to find out what happened before your wife left him.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“There are missing pieces.””
That afternoon, Emma and I went back to the house.
Neither of us felt comfortable there anymore.
Every room carried a memory.
Every memory had a question attached.
When I walked into the bedroom, I noticed something strange.
The closet door was slightly open.
I knew I had closed it.
I walked closer.
Inside was an old box.
A box I had never seen before.
“Emma?””
She came into the room.
The moment she saw the box, she froze.
“What is that?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Where did you find that?””
I pulled it out.
“Why does it matter?””
She stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t open it.””
That was the first time she had ever begged me like that.
I stared at the box.
Then at her.
“What is inside?””
She whispered:
“The reason I left Ryan.””
I slowly opened the lid.
Inside were old photographs.
Court papers.
And one envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Emma’s.
Mine.
I looked at her.
“Why is there a letter for me?””
Her face turned pale.
“Because Ryan wrote it.””
I opened the envelope.
May you like
The first line made my blood run cold.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, Emma has already lied to you again.*
