Chapter 12: The Recording That Changed The Story

Ryan didn’t knock.

He walked straight to the front door and waited.

Like he owned the place.

I opened it before he could.

“What do you want?””

He looked past me.

At Emma.

“I came to save you the embarrassment of court.””

Emma stepped back.

“You don’t save me from anything.””

Ryan smiled.

“You still say that.””

I blocked the doorway.

“Leave.””

He lifted the folder.

“I have proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Emma lied to both of us.””

I looked at the folder.

“What’s inside?””

“A recording.””

Emma’s face changed.

“Ryan, don’t.””

He smiled.

“Why? Afraid he’ll hear the truth?””

My hands tightened.

“Give me the folder.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You should listen to it.””

“Why?””

“Because after you hear it, you’ll understand why she was always afraid.””

I stepped forward.

“And after I hear it?””

His smile disappeared slightly.

“You’ll understand that Emma is not the innocent person she pretends to be.””

Emma shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t believe him.””

I looked at her.

“I need the truth.””

That hurt her.

But she nodded.

Ryan handed me a small device.

“A copy is already with my attorney.””

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

Emma.

And Ryan.

The recording sounded old.

“You can’t leave me,” Ryan’s voice said.

Emma sounded scared.

“Let me go.””

“You think you can just disappear?””

“I’m done.””

“You’ll regret this.””

Then a loud noise.

A door.

Emma’s breathing.

I looked at her.

She was crying.

The recording continued.

Ryan’s voice became quieter.

“If you leave, I’ll make sure nobody believes you.””

The recording stopped.

Everyone was silent.

I looked at Ryan.

“That’s your proof?””

His face changed.

Just slightly.

Because he realized.

The recording didn’t prove what he wanted.

It proved something else.

I turned toward Emma.

She was shaking.

“I’m sorry.””

I walked to her.

Not because everything was fixed.

Not because I forgot.

But because I finally understood how much she had been carrying.

Ryan stepped back.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I understand exactly.””

His confidence disappeared.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from my lawyer.

I opened it.

Attached was a document.

A court filing.

The sender name made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t Ryan.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been silent the entire time.

Someone connected to Noah.

The message contained one sentence:

*Daniel, you need to see who signed this custody request.*

May you like

I opened the attachment.

And the name at the bottom made my entire body freeze.
