Chapter 13: The Name On The Custody Papers

I stared at the document on my phone.

At first, I thought I was reading it wrong.

The letters blurred together.

The name at the bottom didn’t belong to Ryan.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone I trusted.

Someone I never imagined would be part of this.

*Emma Carter.*

My wife.

My hands went cold.

I looked at her.

She immediately knew.

The expression on my face told her everything.

“Daniel…”

I held up the phone.

“Why is your name on this?””

Her face collapsed.

Ryan looked confused.

Then angry.

“What?””

I turned the screen toward him.

“You didn’t know?””

For the first time since he arrived, Ryan looked genuinely surprised.

Emma stepped forward.

“Daniel, let me explain.””

I looked at her.

“Please.””

That one word was all I could say.

Because after everything, I still wanted to hear her explain.

Not because I trusted her completely.

Because I needed to know if there was anything left to save.

Emma took a deep breath.

“I filed it.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“You what?””

“I filed the request.””

He stared at her.

“You told me you wanted me to fight for custody.””

“I never said that.””

“You said you wanted to protect yourself.””

“I wanted to protect Noah.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Emma wiped her tears.

“When Ryan started contacting me, I thought he was trying to take Noah.””

“And he was.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“But I was also afraid of you.””

That hurt.

I didn’t expect it.

“Me?””

She shook her head.

“Not because I thought you would hurt me.””

“Then why?””

“Because I thought if you knew everything… you would take Noah and leave me behind.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at my son sleeping upstairs.

My heart hurt.

“You thought I would do that?””

“I thought everyone eventually leaves.””

I wanted to be angry.

But I saw the truth in her face.

This wasn’t manipulation.

This was fear.

Years of fear.

Ryan stepped forward.

“So she admits she lied.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to act innocent.””

His jaw tightened.

“I’m the one telling you the truth.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re the one using her fear.””

For the first time, Ryan looked uncomfortable.

Because I had finally stopped seeing him as the person with answers.

I saw him as someone who wanted control.

My phone rang.

My lawyer.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me what’s happening.””

“Daniel, I reviewed the filing.””

“And?””

“There’s something strange.””

“What?””

“The custody request was submitted before Ryan filed his motion.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Emma was preparing legally before Ryan appeared.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

My lawyer continued.

“Because she believed someone was coming after Noah.””

The room went silent.

Emma looked at the floor.

“I knew Ryan wouldn’t stop.””

I lowered my phone.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I received a message two weeks before Noah was born.””

“From him?””

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

She looked terrified.

“He said he knew the baby wasn’t his.””

My chest tightened.

“What else?””

She whispered:

“He said if I didn’t give him access, he would expose everything about my past.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“That’s not what I said.””

Everyone looked at him.

A mistake.

A small one.

But enough.

Because he had just admitted he knew what was in the messages.

I stepped closer.

“How would you know what she received?””

Ryan froze.

No answer.

Emma looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw something different in her eyes.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You were watching me.””

Ryan looked away.

The silence was the answer.

I walked toward the door.

“Leave.””

He stared at me.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I opened the door.

“I made my mistake when I believed secrets were safer than the truth.””

Ryan left.

But before he reached his car, he turned around.

“You think this is over?””

I didn’t answer.

He smiled.

“You still don’t know who helped me.””

Then he drove away.

I closed the door.

Emma stood behind me.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“Who helped him?””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

Then my phone buzzed again.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*She’s lying. Ask her about the night she went to the hospital alone.*

I looked at Emma.

May you like

Her face went pale.

Because she knew exactly what night they meant.
