Chapter 9: The Face Behind the Fire
I stared at the photograph for almost a full minute.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because memory is cruel.
It doesn’t always return when you want it.
Sometimes it returns when you’re finally starting to heal.
The photograph showed the burning building.
The broken windows.
The smoke.
And me.
Running.
A hand holding mine.
The person who pulled me away from death.
But the image wasn’t clear enough to show their face.
Only the outline.
Only the ring.
Ethan picked up the photograph carefully.
“Who took this?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“But someone wanted us to see it.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the envelope.
No fingerprints.
No message.
Just my name.
Someone wanted me afraid.
They wanted me remembering.
But fear was something I understood.
I had lived with it.
The difference was that now I wasn’t alone.
Ethan looked at me.
“We need to leave.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re telling me to run?””
“I’m telling you to survive.””
The seriousness in his voice stopped me.
Because Ethan Whitmore wasn’t acting like a wealthy heir anymore.
He was acting like someone who finally understood the danger.
Daniel stood.
“Running won’t help.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Then what does?””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“We find Thomas.””
Richard found us before we could leave.
He stood at the end of the hallway.
His expression was unreadable.
But his eyes went directly to Daniel.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel smiled coldly.
“Neither should you.””
Ethan stepped between them.
“No more secrets.””
Richard looked at his son.
“You don’t know what you’re asking.””
“Yes, I do.””
Ethan’s voice was firm.
“I’m asking why my family destroyed Naomi’s life.””
Richard looked at me.
Then away.
For the first time, I saw regret.
Real regret.
But regret didn’t erase damage.
“You think I wanted what happened?””
I answered.
“I think you allowed it.””
Richard flinched.
That was enough.
Ethan noticed.
“Dad.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“There are things about this family you cannot understand.””
“Try me.””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Thomas was never dead.””
The hallway went silent.
“I know,” Ethan said.
Richard shook his head.
“No. You don’t.””
He stepped closer.
“Thomas built everything this family has.””
“Then why hide him?””
Richard’s voice became quieter.
“Because he was dangerous.””
I looked at him.
“Dangerous enough to burn a building?””
Richard didn’t answer.
And that was the answer.
Daniel moved forward.
“You knew.””
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.””
My anger rose.
“You knew he was alive?””
“Yes.””
“And you let everyone believe he died?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at me.
“Because the moment people knew Thomas survived…”
He stopped.
A sound came from upstairs.
A scream.
Everyone froze.
Then Marcus’s voice echoed through the house.
“Mr. Whitmore!””
We ran.
The scream came from Vanessa’s room.
When we reached the door, it was open.
Vanessa was sitting on the floor.
Terrified.
A broken mirror beside her.
On the wall, written in red letters, were four words:
*SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH.*
Ethan looked at me.
Daniel looked at Richard.
And Richard whispered something that made my blood freeze.
“Thomas found her.””
I stared at the message.
Because suddenly I understood.
Vanessa wasn’t the enemy.
May you like
She was another victim.
And whoever had controlled her had just decided she was no longer useful.
