Chapter 2: Three Hundred Witnesses

The Whitmore charity ball was supposed to be a night of elegance.

Crystal chandeliers.

Expensive gowns.

Politicians, CEOs, and celebrities filling the ballroom.

Three hundred guests gathered beneath golden lights while cameras captured every smile.

I spent six hours preparing for that night.

Not as a guest.

As staff.

My gray uniform was pressed perfectly.

My hair was tied back.

My expression was neutral.

That was the version of Naomi Reyes everyone expected.

Invisible.

Useful.

Forgettable.

But when I entered the ballroom carrying a tray of champagne, Ethan noticed me immediately.

He was standing near the staircase in a dark suit, speaking with donors.

For a second, our eyes met.

And he smiled.

A small smile.

The kind nobody else would notice.

But Vanessa noticed.

Of course she did.

She stood beside him moments later, wearing a silver dress that probably cost more than my yearly salary.

Her eyes followed his.

Then they found me.

The message was clear.

Stay away.

I kept walking.

I had learned long ago that some people wanted a reaction more than they wanted a victory.

I wouldn’t give Vanessa either.

But she wasn’t finished.

About an hour later, I was carrying another tray when she stepped directly into my path.

The ballroom continued moving around us.

People laughed.

Glasses clinked.

A violin played softly.

But Vanessa lowered her voice.

“You really thought Ethan protecting you made you important?””

I stopped.

“Miss Sterling, I’m working.””

She smiled.

“That’s exactly my point.””

I tried to move around her.

She shifted with me.

“You should remember your place.””

I looked at her.

“My place is wherever my employer needs me.””

Her eyes hardened.

“You think you’re clever?””

“No.””

I looked down at the tray.

“I think I’m busy.””

That was when her expression changed.

A dangerous calm replaced the anger.

She stepped closer.

“Everyone eventually remembers what they are.””

I didn’t answer.

Then she moved.

Fast.

Her silver heel lifted.

Straight toward me.

Years of training are difficult to forget.

My body reacted before my mind did.

The tray slipped from my hand.

My fingers caught her ankle.

The entire ballroom stopped.

Vanessa balanced on one foot, staring at me.

Not with anger.

With fear.

Because she finally saw it.

The maid she thought was powerless had moved faster than she could.

I lowered my voice.

“Please don’t make me take this any further.””

Nobody spoke.

Then someone gasped.

Ethan pushed through the crowd.

But he wasn’t looking at Vanessa’s raised foot.

He was looking behind her.

At the security chief.

The man held a tablet in his hand.

His face was serious.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said, “we recovered the deleted footage from the night the earrings appeared in Naomi’s room.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Play it.””

The security chief touched the screen.

The ballroom watched.

And there it was.

The hallway outside my room.

The timestamp showed 2:14 a.m.

A figure approached my door.

Vanessa.

A collective gasp moved through the crowd.

On the video, Vanessa looked around carefully.

Then she unlocked my door.

She entered.

And three minutes later, she walked out.

The earrings were in her hand.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa slowly lowered her foot.

“You don’t understand,” she whispered.

Ethan stared at her.

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, Ethan, listen—”

But he raised his hand.

The confidence she always carried was gone.

For the first time, Vanessa looked like someone who had been caught.

Not misunderstood.

Caught.

I stepped back.

My heart was beating faster than I wanted to admit.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because of what came next.

The security chief looked at Ethan.

“There’s more.””

Ethan turned.

“What do you mean?””

The man swallowed.

“The recovered footage wasn’t deleted by accident.””

He looked toward the tablet.

“Someone accessed the security system from inside Whitmore House.””

The room became silent again.

Ethan’s face changed.

“Who?””

The security chief hesitated.

Then he looked directly at me.

“It was done using an administrator account.””

My blood went cold.

Because I knew what that meant.

Someone powerful inside this house had helped Vanessa.

And whoever it was wasn’t finished.
