Chapter 4: The Night Philadelphia Burned

For eight years, I had buried the truth beneath a different name, a different job, and a different life.

But Richard Whitmore’s voice dragged it back into the light.

“You’re the girl from Philadelphia.””

The office suddenly felt too small.

The walls.

The portraits.

The expensive furniture.

Everything around me blurred into the background.

Ethan looked between us, confused.

“Wait. What are you talking about?””

Richard didn’t answer him.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You survived.””

I forced myself to breathe.

“You remember me?””

Richard slowly walked toward the desk.

“I remember everyone from that night.””

The way he said it made my skin tighten.

Not like someone remembering a tragedy.

Like someone remembering a secret.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Dad, what night?””

I looked at Richard.

Then at Ethan.

And I realized something painful.

Ethan truly didn’t know.

Nobody had told him.

Not even his own father.

Eight years earlier, I wasn’t Naomi Reyes.

I was Naomi Carter.

I worked security.

Not the kind where you stood at a door and checked invitations.

The kind where people hired you when they had something worth protecting.

I protected witnesses.

Executives.

Families caught in dangerous situations.

I spent years learning how to stop threats before they reached the people behind me.

Then came Philadelphia.

A wealthy businessman named Daniel Voss contacted my team.

He claimed he needed protection because someone was trying to silence him.

We thought it was a simple security job.

We were wrong.

The night everything happened, I was outside his penthouse when the building lost power.

Thirty seconds later, the first gunshot came.

Then another.

Then the alarms.

I still remembered the smell.

Smoke.

Burning wires.

Fear.

I remembered running through dark hallways while everyone else ran away.

I found Daniel’s daughter hiding beneath a table.

I got her out.

But before I escaped, I saw something I was never supposed to see.

A meeting.

Three men discussing money.

Names.

Deals.

One of those names was Whitmore.

Richard watched my face carefully.

“You saw too much.””

Ethan looked at his father.

“What is she talking about?””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“That night was complicated.””

I laughed quietly.

“Complicated?””

My voice surprised even me.

“A building burned. People died. A young woman disappeared. And you call that complicated?””

Ethan stared at me.

“Naomi…”

I turned toward him.

“I was there.””

Silence.

Richard moved toward the window.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“I understand enough.””

“No,” he said.

His voice became colder.

“You understand what you survived. Not why it happened.””

That stopped me.

Because there was something in his words.

Something I hadn’t considered.

For years, I believed Philadelphia was a simple betrayal.

A job gone wrong.

A powerful person trying to erase evidence.

But Richard sounded like someone who knew the entire story.

Ethan looked angry now.

“You helped Vanessa frame Naomi?””

Richard didn’t respond.

That was answer enough.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Did you?””

Richard finally looked at his son.

“I protected this family.””

“By destroying someone innocent?””

“I protected you.””

Ethan’s face changed.

Like those words hurt more than any confession.

I picked up the photograph from the desk.

The woman behind Richard.

“Who is she?””

Richard’s eyes followed the picture.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“She was someone who should have stayed gone.””

My fingers tightened around the photo.

“Her name.””

Richard said nothing.

Ethan looked at me.

“You know her?””

I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

“Her name was Clara Voss.””

Ethan frowned.

“Voss?””

Richard went completely still.

And that reaction told me everything.

He knew exactly who she was.

Before anyone could speak, the office phone rang.

Richard answered.

His face changed after three seconds.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

He listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

“Someone broke into the archive room.””

Ethan immediately asked, “What was taken?””

Richard lowered the phone.

“Only one thing.””

“What?””

His eyes moved toward the photograph in my hand.

“The file about Philadelphia.””

My heart sank.

Because there was only one person who could know I was looking for that file.

Someone who had been watching me.

May you like

Someone inside Whitmore House.

And they had just made their next move.
