Chapter 14: The Family We Chose

The truth felt heavier than any weapon.

I looked at Matteo.

He looked at me.

Neither of us knew what to say.

Everything we thought we understood had changed again.

Adrian’s voice continued through the speakers.

“Your fathers created a false record.””

My mother whispered:

“No…”

I turned.

“You knew?””

She looked devastated.

“I knew there were secrets.””

“Not enough.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Never enough.””

Matteo stepped toward the screen.

“Adrian.””

No answer.

“You don’t get to hide.””

The speakers went silent.

Then a door opened.

Adrian appeared on the balcony above us.

Everyone aimed their weapons.

But he didn’t look afraid.

“You want answers?””

Matteo raised his weapon.

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“Then listen.””

He looked at me.

“Your father had one final plan.””

I said nothing.

“He knew the organization would destroy itself if power stayed divided.””

He looked at Matteo.

“So he created a solution.””

“What solution?”” Matteo asked.

Adrian smiled.

“You.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

He pointed between us.

“Elena and Matteo.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does.””

He walked down slowly.

“Your fathers were not enemies.””

The room went silent.

“They were brothers.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“The war between the families was created by people who wanted control.””

He looked at Matteo.

“Your father and Elena’s father worked together.””

Matteo looked shocked.

“So the feud…”

“Fake.””

I felt dizzy.

Years of history.

Violence.

Loss.

All built on a lie.

Adrian stopped.

“The only people who knew the truth were eliminated.””

My mother whispered:

“Except me.””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“You carried this alone?””

She nodded.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I looked down at my son.

Everyone had tried to protect me.

And everyone had hurt me.

Then Matteo stepped beside me.

For once, neither of us spoke as mafia.

Not as heirs.

Not as enemies.

Just family.

“What happens now?”” I asked.

Adrian smiled.

“Now?””

He looked toward the children.

“Now you decide.””

“Decide what?””

“Whether you continue the empire.””

I looked at Matteo.

He understood.

For generations, people had fought over power.

Destroyed families.

Killed innocent people.

All because they believed control mattered more than love.

I looked at my children.

My sons.

His daughter.

Three babies who had already survived more than anyone should.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped forward.

“No more empire.””

Adrian frowned.

“You would abandon your inheritance?””

“Yes.””

“You would throw away everything your father built?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at my children.

“I would end it.””

Silence.

Then Matteo smiled slightly.

The first real smile I had ever seen from him.

“You sound like him.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

“Our father.””

The moment was interrupted by a loud crash.

The remaining guards rushed in.

“Boss!””

Matteo turned.

“What?””

“Adrian’s helicopter is ready.””

Everyone looked up.

Adrian stepped backward.

“You can choose peace.””

He smiled.

“But the world you inherited will not allow it.””

He moved toward the exit.

Matteo raised his weapon.

“Stop.””

Adrian looked at me.

“You still don’t know the final truth.””

I frowned.

“What truth?””

He smiled.

“The child you lost wasn’t the only one taken.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

Daniel went pale.

“No.””

I turned.

“Daniel?””

Adrian laughed.

“Ask your husband what happened before the twins were born.””

I looked at Daniel.

The man I loved.

The man who lied.

Again.

“Daniel…”

He looked broken.

“Elena, please.””

My voice shook.

“What did you do?””

He closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“I wasn’t protecting your sons.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

“I was protecting the third child.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Third?””

Daniel looked at me.

May you like

And said the words that destroyed everything.

“You gave birth to three babies.””
