Chapter 11: The Brother Who Hid the Truth
I waited for Matteo to deny it.
Immediately.
Angrily.
Anything.
But he didn’t.
He just stood there.
Silent.
That silence hurt more than a confession.
“No.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Matteo looked at me.
“Elena…”
“Tell me.””
His eyes lowered.
And I understood.
The truth before he ever spoke.
I stepped back.
“You knew.””
“I knew there was a child involved.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew my son was alive.””
“I didn’t know it was yours.””
“That doesn’t make it better!””
The little boy in the room started crying.
Everyone froze.
I looked at him.
My son.
Feeling my pain.
Feeling the tension.
I wanted to run to him.
But I couldn’t move.
Not with Matteo standing there.
Not with this betrayal between us.
Viktor smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I turned toward him.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“Of course.””
His expression was calm.
“Truth is always more painful than lies.””
Matteo stepped forward.
“Enough.””
“No.””
I stopped him.
“I want to hear it.””
Matteo looked at me.
“Elena.””
“I want the truth.””
He took a slow breath.
“Three months ago, my organization discovered someone was targeting my family.””
“Your daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And my sons.””
He nodded.
“I didn’t know.””
“But you knew children were involved.””
“Yes.””
My hands trembled.
“What did you do?””
His silence was answer enough.
“You made a choice.””
“Yes.””
“What choice?””
His voice became quiet.
“I ordered my people to hide any children connected to the threat.””
I stared at him.
“You took my son.””
“No.””
“You separated him from me.””
“I thought I was protecting him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“But nobody protected me.””
Matteo looked devastated.
For the first time, I saw guilt.
Real guilt.
“I was wrong.””
Those words almost broke me.
Because Matteo Volkov wasn’t a man who admitted mistakes.
Not to anyone.
Not ever.
Viktor stepped closer.
“You see, Elena? Even your own brother saw you as a problem to manage.””
I looked at Matteo.
The word brother still felt impossible.
“I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“I trusted you with my daughter.””
Matteo looked down.
“And you trusted me with yours.””
The room became silent.
Because we both knew.
That was the cruelest part.
He had held my son.
And I had held his daughter.
Two strangers connected by children neither of us could lose.
Then my son reached toward me.
A tiny hand.
A simple movement.
And suddenly nothing else mattered.
Not Matteo.
Not Viktor.
Not the empire.
I walked toward him.
This time, nobody stopped me.
I picked him up.
He fit against me perfectly.
Like he had always belonged there.
He touched my face.
And whispered one word.
“Mommy.””
I broke.
Completely.
I cried into his hair.
“I’m here.””
Behind me, Matteo quietly said:
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t turn around.
Because I wasn’t ready.
Not yet.
Viktor watched us.
Then he spoke.
“You think this is the end?””
I held my son tighter.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Matteo still doesn’t know who ordered the attack on his father.””
The room changed.
Matteo looked at him.
“What did you say?””
Viktor leaned back.
“The person who destroyed both your families…”
He looked at me.
“Is standing much closer than you think.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Viktor smiled.
“Ask your husband.””
Everyone turned toward Daniel.
His face had gone pale.
“No.””
My heart stopped.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
May you like
Another lie.
Another piece of my life I had never been allowed to see.
