Chapter 12: The Last Lie My Husband Told
Daniel looked like a man waiting for a sentence.
Not a punishment.
A sentence.
Because he already knew he deserved it.
I held my son tighter.
“Tell me.””
He swallowed.
“Elena…”
“Tell me.””
Matteo stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I didn’t do what you think.””
Viktor laughed.
“Of course he says that.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Were you involved?””
His eyes met mine.
“I was trying to stop it.””
“Stop what?””
He looked toward my children.
“The plan.””
My stomach tightened.
“What plan?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“The plan to remove Elena from power.””
I stared.
“I don’t have power.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He stepped closer.
“Your father didn’t just leave you money or a name.””
He looked at Matteo.
“He left you control.””
Matteo’s face darkened.
“And someone wanted that.””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone inside the organization.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then looked at Viktor.
Viktor smiled.
“Finally.””
Matteo raised his weapon.
“You.””
Viktor shrugged.
“I was tired of cleaning up after weak leaders.””
My mother stepped forward.
“You killed her father.””
Viktor smiled.
“I removed an obstacle.””
The room filled with anger.
But Daniel wasn’t finished.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel looked at me.
“The hospital attack wasn’t random.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Daniel.””
His voice broke.
“I found out too late.””
“You always find out too late.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
They were supposed to.
“You should have told me.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control the situation.””
He didn’t deny it.
Because it was true.
Then Viktor interrupted.
“You’re all missing the point.””
He walked toward the window.
“The successor is finally here.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
He looked at me.
“Your father’s rules were clear.””
My mother went pale.
“No.””
Viktor smiled.
“The successor must unite both bloodlines.””
He pointed toward Matteo.
“Volkov.””
Then toward me.
“Your father’s family.””
I felt sick.
“What are you saying?””
Viktor answered calmly.
“Your father planned for you and Matteo to lead together.””
Silence.
Matteo looked at me.
“No.””
Viktor laughed.
“You can’t change blood.””
I looked at my brother.
My entire life had been a lie.
But somehow, the one thing I believed was impossible was true.
We were family.
Then a guard rushed into the room.
“Boss!””
Matteo turned.
“What?””
The guard looked at me.
“We found the person who funded the hospital operation.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
The guard handed Matteo a tablet.
He looked at the screen.
Then slowly turned it toward me.
I saw a name.
A name I recognized.
A name that made my heart stop.
Because it belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had held my hand when I cried.
Someone who had told me my babies were gone.
My doctor.
Adrian Cross.
But underneath his name was another line.
*Project Director: Elena Volkov Reclamation Program*
I couldn’t breathe.
Matteo whispered:
“Elena…”
I stared at the screen.
The truth was worse than any lie.
Because Adrian wasn’t just the doctor who stole my son.
He was the person who created the entire plan.
