Chapter 8: The Secret Inside the Clock

The officer drew his weapon and ordered everyone away from the grandfather clock.

Michael moved between my mother and me.

“Stay back, Sarah.””

I could barely hear him over the pounding of my heart.

Three knocks had come from inside the clock.

Not from the pendulum.

Not from the mechanism.

Someone had knocked from within the wooden case.

The officer approached cautiously.

“Whoever is inside, identify yourself!””

Silence.

He repeated the command.

Then a muffled voice answered.

“Don't open the back panel. It's wired.””

My mother screamed.

I stumbled backward, knocking my hip against the coffee table.

Michael grabbed my arm.

“Stay with me.””

The officer called for backup and secured the room. No one touched the clock while they waited for the appropriate specialists.

Minutes later, two additional officers arrived. They examined the clock and discovered that the back panel had been modified. A thin cable ran through a narrow opening toward a small device hidden behind the lower wooden casing.

The voice came again.

“I'm not armed. Please. I need to talk to Sarah.””

My blood ran cold.

“Ethan?””

“Sarah?””

His voice was unmistakable.

I stepped forward instinctively, but Michael stopped me.

“Let the officers handle this.””

The officers worked carefully, securing the device and opening the compartment. Ethan emerged from the narrow space behind the clock, dusty and pale, with a cut above his left eyebrow.

I rushed toward him as soon as the officers confirmed it was safe.

“You idiot!”” I cried, grabbing his shoulders.

“What happened to you?””

He winced.

“It's good to see you, too.””

I pulled him into a hug, then shoved him away just enough to look at his face.

“Who hurt you?””

“I can't prove it was Daniel.””

“Ethan!””

He looked toward our mother.

“Did you tell her everything?””

My mother nodded miserably.

“Enough of it.””

“Then she knows about Rebecca.””

“She knows you have a recording,” I said.

“She knows Daniel paid your debts. She knows she lied to the police.””

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“I never wanted you dragged into this.””

“You keep saying that as if silence protected me.””

He didn't argue.

The officers asked Ethan to explain why he had been hiding inside the clock.

He told us that after our phone call, two men had entered his apartment. They demanded to know where he had put Rebecca's recording. When he said he didn't have it, one of them struck him and threatened to hurt me if he continued cooperating.

Ethan escaped through a rear stairwell and came here because he remembered what our mother had told him years ago: Rebecca had hidden something behind the clock.

“I came to see if the original recording was still here,” he explained.

“But I couldn't find the key. I knew someone might come looking, so I hid until I heard you arrive.””

Michael folded his arms.

“You could have called the police.””

“I didn't know who I could trust.””

“You can start by telling us everything you know.””

Ethan nodded.

Then he reached inside his jacket and removed a small plastic memory card.

“I found this taped behind the compartment.””

My mother gasped.

“Rebecca's recording?””

“Maybe. I haven't listened to it.””

Michael immediately asked the officer to document the discovery and arrange for the card to be examined properly.

But Ethan wasn't finished.

“There was something else behind the clock,” he said.

“A folded letter addressed to Sarah.””

My hands began trembling.

“Where is it?””

Ethan reached into his pocket and handed me a yellowed envelope.

My name was written across the front in handwriting I recognized from the birthday cards Rebecca had once sent Lily.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

Sarah,

If you are reading this, then something has happened to me, and Daniel has probably convinced everyone that it was an accident.

I need you to understand something. The man you love may not be the man you think he is.

I found evidence that Daniel has been moving money from the company into accounts controlled by people close to him. Evelyn helped him. Your mother may have helped without knowing the full truth.

I have made copies of everything. One copy is with someone I trust. Another is hidden where Daniel will never think to look.

If he ever tries to make you believe you are sick, or tells you that you are losing your mind, remember this letter.

Trust what you see.

Trust what you remember.

And protect Lily.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Rebecca had known.

She had known Daniel might manipulate the people around him, and she had tried to leave a warning for whoever came after her.

But one sentence at the bottom of the page made me look up.

The most important evidence is not the recording. It is the document Daniel signed the night he made the agreement with Evelyn.

Michael read over my shoulder.

“What document?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know.””

My mother whispered, “The agreement about the two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

“No,” Ethan said.

“That was only the payment record. Rebecca was talking about something else.””

He turned toward me.

“Sarah, do you remember the company merger Daniel announced six years ago? The one that supposedly saved the business from bankruptcy?””

I nodded.

Daniel had told everyone that an investor had rescued the company. He'd celebrated with champagne and thanked his staff for their loyalty.

“I remember.””

“Rebecca discovered the investor didn't exist. The money came from a company registered under another person's name.””

“Whose name?””

Ethan looked at our mother.

“Eleanor Hayes.””

I stared at her.

She shook her head violently.

“I didn't create a company. I never invested in Daniel's business.””

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Your name was on the documents. And the signature looked exactly like yours.””

My mother sank into a chair.

“He must have forged it.””

Michael exchanged a glance with the officer.

“That is something investigators can verify.””

Then Ethan pointed toward the letter.

“Rebecca said the signed document would prove who controlled the company. If we find it, we can establish whether Daniel used our mother's identity to hide the money.””

“And where is it?”” I asked.

Ethan looked toward the clock.

“Rebecca said Daniel had it in his office.””

I thought of Lily's revelation about the silver key and the old papers hidden behind the clock in Daniel's office.

The same clock he had threatened to destroy.

Michael's phone rang.

He listened, then looked at us.

“Authorities have located Daniel's vehicle outside his office building.””

“Is he there?”” I asked.

“Possibly. There's another problem.””

He lowered his voice.

“The building's security system shows someone entered Daniel's office less than ten minutes ago.””

“Who?””

Michael turned his phone toward me.

The surveillance image showed a woman in a dark coat carrying a red handbag.

A gold bird hung from her necklace.

Evelyn Price.

And she wasn't alone.

She was holding Lily's hand.
