Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Vanessa placed the photograph on the table as though it were burning her fingers.
It showed me sitting in a medical examination room, smiling politely at a man in a white coat.
Dr. Andrew Keller stood behind me with one hand resting on my shoulder.
I remembered that appointment.
Daniel had insisted on driving me because he said the doctor was an old friend who could help with my exhaustion. The office had smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee. Dr. Keller had asked about my sleep, my appetite, and the occasional dizziness I had experienced after breakfast.
At the time, I thought he was being thorough.
Now I noticed something I had never questioned.
Daniel was standing in the background of the photograph.
He wasn't supposed to be in the examination room.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at Daniel before answering.
“From his office.””
“Why were you taking photographs of me?””
“I wasn't. Daniel took them.””
My husband let out a contemptuous laugh.
“She is lying to save herself.””
Vanessa flinched but continued.
“He wanted records of every appointment. He said he needed to prove you had been sick before the divorce.””
Michael picked up the photograph by its edges.
“Ms. Cole, are you willing to explain these claims under oath?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
“You don't know what you're agreeing to.””
A court officer immediately moved between them.
“Mr. Mercer, return to your seat.””
Vanessa's hands trembled.
“He told me that if I cooperated, we would have a new house, a new life, and enough money that we'd never have to worry again. He said Sarah's condition was getting worse and that the divorce would protect me from being dragged into her medical problems.””
I stared at her.
“You watched him convince me I was sick.””
“I thought you were sick.””
“You saw me collapse in my kitchen.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
“You watched me struggle to walk across a room. You watched Lily bring me water because I was too dizzy to stand. And you still moved into my house.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know what I did.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“You know what you're afraid of now.””
She had no answer.
Michael opened his notebook.
“Let's start with the medical appointments. Did you personally witness anyone put a substance into Sarah's drink?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Three times.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“What was it?”” I asked.
“I don't know the name. Daniel gave me a small bottle and told me how much to use. He said it would make you sleepy and confused, nothing more.””
“Did you know what was in it?””
“No.””
“Did you ask?””
Vanessa pressed a tissue against her mouth.
“He told me you had a condition that made you sensitive to stress. He said your doctor had approved it.””
I felt a strange, cold calm settle over me.
“Where did you put it?””
“In your orange juice. Usually when you were working at the kitchen counter.””
I remembered those mornings.
The sudden weakness. The heaviness in my limbs. The way Daniel would take my laptop from me and tell me to lie down.
He had seemed so caring.
He had rubbed my shoulders and brought me blankets while quietly persuading me to give up more responsibilities at the company.
“Why?”” I asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“He said he needed you to stop questioning the accounts. You were getting suspicious about the missing money.””
That was the moment I understood.
My illness hadn't merely been a convenient excuse for the divorce.
It had been part of the plan to make me dependent, exhausted, and easier to deceive.
Daniel stood.
“This is absurd. She's inventing everything because she knows she's going to lose everything.””
Judge Whitmore struck her gavel.
“Mr. Mercer, sit down immediately.””
He obeyed, but his eyes never left Vanessa.
Michael asked, “What happened after the third incident?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Sarah became so sick that Daniel called Dr. Keller. He was afraid someone would take her to a hospital.””
“Why?””
“He said the hospital might run tests he couldn't explain.””
I gripped the table.
“What did you do?””
“I stopped giving you anything.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Daniel said he had photographs of me taking money from the company. He said he'd send them to the police and tell everyone I had stolen from him.””
“You were already involved.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I was afraid.””
I looked at her for a long moment.
I understood fear. I understood how someone could become trapped by another person's threats.
But Vanessa had not simply watched from the sidelines. She had helped Daniel build the trap around me.
“I hope you tell the whole truth,” I said.
“Not because I forgive you. Because I want Lily to grow up knowing the truth.””
Vanessa nodded.
Then Michael asked the question that changed everything.
“What did the payment to Evelyn Price have to do with Rebecca Mercer?””
Vanessa stopped crying.
Her face became utterly still.
“I didn't know Rebecca was involved until after the money had been transferred.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Michael leaned forward.
“Transferred by whom?””
“Daniel.””
“To Evelyn Price?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me it was a settlement for an old business dispute. Later, I found a document saying the payment was connected to Rebecca's death.””
Margaret rose from her chair.
“You knew?””
“No!”” Vanessa cried.
“I swear I didn't know until I found the agreement!””
“Then why didn't you report it?””
“Because Daniel told me the document was fake. He said Evelyn had threatened to ruin him.””
Margaret shook her head.
“You are describing the same woman who visited Rebecca before she died.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“That's because Evelyn worked for Daniel's company years ago. She handled payments for a development project. Rebecca discovered money was being moved through shell companies.””
Michael stopped writing.
“Are you saying Rebecca discovered financial misconduct?””
“Yes. She told Daniel she was going to speak to an attorney.””
Daniel suddenly slammed his palm against the table.
“That's enough!””
The court officer moved toward him again.
Judge Whitmore's voice was sharp.
“Mr. Mercer, one more outburst and I will have you removed.””
He sat back, breathing hard.
Michael continued.
“What happened to Rebecca after she made that threat?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
The little girl was sitting beside Margaret, her pink rabbit in her lap.
“I don't know,” Vanessa whispered.
“I wasn't there that night.””
“Then who was?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Finally, she pointed toward the courtroom doors.
“Evelyn.””
The judge immediately instructed the court officer to contact the appropriate authorities.
Daniel looked as if the air had been sucked out of him.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
“There is something else. Rebecca left a recording. Daniel spent years trying to find it.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What recording?””
“I don't know what was on it. Rebecca told me once that she'd made a copy of a conversation with Daniel. She said if anything happened to her, someone would eventually find it.””
“Who had the copy?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with terror.
“Evelyn.””
Then she leaned toward Michael and whispered, “But Evelyn didn't keep it. She gave it to someone else.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked straight at me.
“Your brother, Ethan.””
My blood ran cold.
The same brother whose debts Daniel had paid.
The same brother whose financial problems had suddenly disappeared.
Before I could ask another question, my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
*Sarah, don't trust your mother. Don't trust Daniel. And don't let Lily leave with Margaret.*
A second message appeared.
*I have Rebecca's recording. Meet me alone tonight, or your daughter will be the next person they silence.*
I stared at the screen.
Then a final message arrived, containing a photograph of Lily asleep in her bed.
Taken that morning.

Someone had been inside Daniel's house.
Someone who knew exactly where my little girl slept.
