Chapter 9: Vanessa’s Last Secret
The silence after Ryan’s call was unbearable.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at me.
And for the first time since I discovered the affair, I didn’t see a liar.
I saw someone terrified.
But fear didn’t erase what she had done.
“You knew where the safe was.””
My voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Yes.””
Detective Harris closed his eyes briefly.
“Mrs. Bennett…”
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“I know how bad this looks.””
I almost smiled.
“How bad?””
She shook her head.
“You hate me.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
I hated the betrayal.
I hated the lies.
But part of me still remembered every morning coffee.
Every joke.
Every moment before everything collapsed.
“Where is it?””
She looked away.
“The safe isn’t missing.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
“It was never in the cabinet.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Your father hid it before he died.””
“Where?””
She looked around the hidden room.
“In here.””
Everyone became still.
“You mean the safe is in this room?””
She nodded.
“He told me if anything happened, I was supposed to give you the location.””
I stared.
“You waited eight years?””
Her eyes filled.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She whispered:
“Of what was inside.””
Detective Harris looked at the hidden room.
“What’s in the safe?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The truth.””
That answer made me angry.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I stepped closer.
“My whole life has been destroyed because everyone wanted to protect some secret.””
Vanessa nodded.
“You’re right.””
She walked toward the desk.
Then she pulled open a hidden drawer.
Inside was a small key.
She placed it on the table.
“I should have given this to you years ago.””
I looked at it.
A simple metal key.
But somehow, it felt heavier than anything.
Victor took it.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He shook his head.
“Michael has to open it.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because your father wanted you to.””
I took the key.
My hands were shaking.
There was another hidden compartment beneath the desk.
A small safe door.
I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside were three things.
A hard drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
I picked up the photograph first.
It showed my father.
Victor.
Daniel.
And someone else.
A woman.
A woman I recognized.
My mother.
But my mother had died when I was ten.
Why was she in a picture connected to everything?
I grabbed the note.
It was short.
Michael,
If you found this, then they failed to stop you.
The truth about our family is not what you were told.
My breathing slowed.
I kept reading.
Your mother did not die from illness.
I froze.
The room disappeared.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
My father had told me she got sick.
That doctors couldn’t save her.
I read the next line.
She was murdered.
My fingers went numb.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Detective Harris stared at the paper.
Victor whispered:
“Your father spent his final years trying to find who did it.””
I looked up.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the hard drive suddenly beeped.
A file opened automatically.
A video appeared.
My father.
Again.
But this time he looked angry.
Not afraid.
Angry.
“Michael,” he said.
“If you are seeing this, then I know who killed your mother.””
I leaned closer.
My heart was pounding.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“The person responsible is someone you have known your entire life.””
The video paused.
A loading circle appeared.
Then the next sentence appeared on screen.
*CONFIDENTIAL: SUBJECT IDENTIFIED*
The file finished loading.
And the name appeared.
I stopped breathing.

Because the person who destroyed my family…
Was the last person I ever expected.
