Chapter 8: The Hidden Room Beneath the House

We left the workshop within minutes.

Nobody argued.

Nobody asked questions.

Because everyone understood one thing.

Whoever was behind this knew exactly where we were.

And they were always one step ahead.

Detective Harris drove us back to my house.

I sat in silence.

Vanessa sat beside me.

For the first time in twelve years, I didn’t know what to say to my wife.

Not because there was nothing.

Because there was too much.

When we arrived, Victor walked through the house carefully.

Checking windows.

Checking doors.

Like someone who had spent years hiding.

I watched him.

“You really expect me to trust you?””

He didn’t turn around.

“No.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because your father asked me to protect you.””

I laughed.

“Eight years late.””

Victor stopped.

“I know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because he didn’t defend himself.

He accepted the blame.

Detective Harris looked at the house plans on his phone.

“There’s something strange.””

I walked over.

“What?””

“Your property records show renovations twelve years ago.””

I frowned.

“Yes. We remodeled the basement.””

Victor looked up.

“Who paid for it?””

I thought.

“Vanessa handled the contractor.””

Everyone looked at her.

She froze.

“What?””

Victor asked softly:

“Who built the basement?””

Her face changed.

“I don’t remember.””

Nobody believed her.

I walked downstairs.

The basement looked normal.

Storage boxes.

Old furniture.

Christmas decorations.

But now I saw everything differently.

Everything could be hiding something.

Victor touched the wall.

“Your father loved secrets.””

I glared.

“He loved protecting people.””

Victor nodded.

“Exactly.””

He knocked on the wall.

Three times.

Then waited.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

Different pattern.

A hollow sound came back.

My heart started racing.

“There’s something behind it.””

Detective Harris searched for a hidden mechanism.

Minutes later, a small section of the wall moved.

Behind it was a narrow doorway.

A hidden room.

I stared.

“My house had a secret room?””

Victor looked at Vanessa.

“Your father built it before you married Michael.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt fresh all over again.

Inside the room was a desk.

A safe.

And dozens of files.

Victor opened the first folder.

“Your father documented everything.””

Detective Harris grabbed papers.

“Bank transfers.””

Another folder.

“Property records.””

Another.

“Names.””

I looked closer.

Then I saw one name repeated.

Daniel Thompson.

But underneath it was another name.

One I recognized.

My own.

“What?””

Victor looked at me.

“Your father was investigating you.””

My heart dropped.

“Me?””

“No.””

He pointed at the documents.

“Someone was using your identity.””

I looked through the papers.

Fake accounts.

Fake signatures.

Fake transactions.

Someone had been building a case against me.

Making it look like I was involved.

Detective Harris turned serious.

“Someone wanted you blamed.””

“For what?””

Victor answered.

“For your father’s murder.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“My father died of a heart attack.””

Victor looked at me.

“That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.””

Vanessa started crying.

“Michael…”

I turned.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

She couldn’t deny it.

Victor opened the final folder.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting again.

This time, it wasn’t addressed to me.

It was addressed to Vanessa.

I stared at her.

“What does it say?””

She didn’t move.

“Vanessa?””

Her hands shook.

Then she whispered:

“It says…”

She looked at the letter.

“‘If Michael ever discovers the truth, tell him the person closest to him is the one who put him in danger.’”

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“Michael Bennett.””

My blood froze.

Because I recognized it.

Ryan.

“You’re with Victor now.””

I said nothing.

Ryan laughed quietly.

“You really do trust the wrong people.””

I looked around the room.

“Where is my father’s safe?””

A pause.

Then Ryan said:

“Ask your wife.””

The call ended.

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

May you like

And this time…

She didn’t deny it.
