Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Locked Cabinet

The garage door opened with a loud mechanical hum.

I walked faster than I realized I was moving.

Vanessa followed behind me.

“Michael, wait.””

I ignored her.

The cabinet was in the corner of the garage.

A place I rarely opened.

Not because I forgot about it.

Because I didn’t need to.

Inside were things that mattered.

Things that couldn’t be replaced.

My father’s watch collection.

The documents he left behind after he passed away.

The safe containing the inheritance papers.

Memories.

Security.

A piece of my old life.

The cabinet door was open.

The lock was broken.

I stared at the empty shelves.

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Then I turned around.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa froze.

“Michael…”

“Where is my father’s safe?””

She looked away.

That answer was enough.

I stepped closer.

“You knew what was in there.””

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You didn’t know?””

My voice echoed through the garage.

“You were moving my things out with another man.””

She covered her face.

“It wasn’t like that.””

I pointed at the empty cabinet.

“Then tell me what it was like.””

She stayed silent.

My phone buzzed.

A bank notification.

At first, I thought it was a mistake.

Then I opened it.

A transfer request.

$185,000.

From our joint account.

Pending approval.

Recipient:

Ryan Thompson.

I felt numb.

I turned the screen toward Vanessa.

“Explain this.””

Her face changed.

Not guilt.

Panic.

“Michael, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No more excuses.””

She reached for me.

“Please.””

I moved away.

“What was Ryan planning to do?””

Her silence answered again.

I opened the transfer details.

There was an address attached.

A property in Savannah.

I knew that address.

Or at least I thought I did.

Vanessa had told me years ago that her aunt owned a small house there.

A family property.

Something she might inherit someday.

I searched the property records.

The page loaded.

Then I felt my hands go cold.

Owner:

Vanessa Bennett.

Second owner:

Daniel Thompson.

Not Ryan.

Daniel.

I looked up.

“Who is Daniel Thompson?””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

The garage became completely silent.

Finally she whispered:

“Michael…”

“Who is he?””

She sat down.

And for the first time, she looked terrified.

“I can explain.””

I stared at her.

“Everyone says that right before they tell the truth.””

She wiped her face.

“Daniel was someone from my past.””

“Your past?””

“Yes.””

“How far back?””

She didn’t answer.

My phone rang again.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man spoke.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Detective Harris. I’m calling from Savannah.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why are you calling me?””

The detective paused.

“Because we need information regarding Daniel Thompson.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does he have to do with my wife?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Mr. Bennett, according to our records, Daniel Thompson is legally married.””

I waited.

“Married to who?””

The detective’s voice became serious.

“Vanessa Bennett.””

The world went quiet.

I looked at my wife.

She was already crying.

Not because she had been caught cheating.

Because the truth was finally catching up.

“Detective,” I said slowly, “are you telling me my wife has another husband?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t move.

Twelve years.

Every anniversary.

Every family gathering.

Every moment I thought we were building a life together.

There was another man.

“Mr. Bennett,” the detective continued, “we believe you may be involved in something much larger than infidelity.””

I looked at the empty cabinet.

The missing safe.

The transfer request.

The lawn worker.

“Why?””

The detective lowered his voice.

“Because Daniel Thompson disappeared six years ago.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“And now,” he said, “someone is trying to move his assets using your wife’s identity.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was shaking.

Then the detective said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mr. Bennett… Ryan Thompson is not a lawn worker.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then who is he?””

May you like

The detective answered:

“He is Daniel Thompson’s son.””
