Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Attack

The video played three times.

I watched every second.

Every movement.

Every face.

Every detail.

Because I was searching for one thing.

The person behind my daughter’s attack.

The footage showed the athletic field.

Nathan and the other students.

Emily walking alone.

Everything happened exactly as I remembered.

Except for one part.

Thirty seconds before Nathan picked up the stick…

Someone walked toward him.

A woman.

Not a student.

An adult.

She wore sunglasses and a long coat.

She handed Nathan something.

Then she whispered into his ear.

The video quality wasn’t perfect.

But it was enough.

Enough to show that Nathan wasn’t acting alone.

Daniel watched beside me.

His face was unreadable.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He looked at the screen.

“I don’t know.””

I turned toward him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely worried.

“That woman isn’t connected to me.””

“Then who is she?””

He remained silent.

I stepped closer.

“You said I was looking at the wrong enemy.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was.””

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Tell me you found her.””

“We’re working on it.””

“Who is she?””

A pause.

“Sir…”

“What?””

“We enhanced the image.””

“And?””

His voice became quiet.

“You need to see this.””

A few seconds later, an image appeared on my phone.

The woman’s face was clearer.

I stared.

And my entire body went cold.

Because I knew her.

Not personally.

But from somewhere I never expected.

A newspaper article.

Eight years ago.

A woman standing beside Daniel Whitmore’s wife.

Her sister.

Her name was Olivia Whitmore.

Daniel’s wife’s younger sister.

I looked at Daniel.

“You lied.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“You said you didn’t know her.””

His expression changed when he saw the image.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

Because his reaction wasn’t fear.

It was shock.

“Olivia died.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“What did you say?””

“My wife’s sister died years ago.””

Marcus spoke through the phone.

“Sir.””

I looked down.

“We checked the records.””

“And?””

Another pause.

“The woman in the video is officially dead.””

Nobody spoke.

The impossible had just become real.

A dead woman had walked into my daughter’s school.

And she had orchestrated an attack.

That night, I returned home with more questions than answers.

Emily was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

She looked up.

“You found something.””

I forced a small smile.

“How did you know?””

“Your face.””

I sat across from her.

“Emily…”

She waited.

“Do you remember anyone else from the accident?””

Her pencil stopped moving.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

She looked at me.

“There was a woman.””

My heart raced.

“What woman?””

“She was outside the car.””

“Before or after?””

Emily frowned.

“I don’t know.””

She closed her eyes.

“I remember she was crying.””

“Crying?””

“Yes.””

“Did she say anything?””

Emily became very still.

Then she whispered:

“She said she was sorry.””

I leaned forward.

“Emily, what happened next?””

My daughter looked terrified.

“Dad…”

“What?””

“I remember seeing her face.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Who was it?””

Emily looked at me.

And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“It was the woman from the newspaper.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Olivia Whitmore?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Sweetheart, that’s impossible.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“No, Dad.””

She shook her head.

“She wasn’t dead.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

One sentence.

One picture.

The picture was of Emily sleeping in her room.

Taken minutes ago.

The message said:

“You found the past.””

May you like

Another message arrived.

“You won’t survive the future.””
