Chapter 11: The Woman Who Saved My Daughter
I arrived at the safe house before sunrise.
I didn’t know what I expected.
A woman who hated me?
A woman who blamed me?
A woman who wanted revenge?
Instead, I found someone who looked exhausted.
Sarah Bennett opened the door.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Because she remembered me.
And I didn’t remember her.
That was the cruelest part.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Alexander.””
Hearing my name from her felt strange.
Like hearing a song I used to know.
“Sarah.””
She looked at me carefully.
“You really don’t remember.””
It wasn’t an accusation.
It was sadness.
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked down.
“I always wondered what you would say when you saw me again.””
“And?””
A small, painful smile appeared.
“I thought you’d be angry.””
“I am.””
Her expression changed.
“But not at you.””
I stepped inside.
The room was simple.
A table.
A chair.
A few boxes.
A life built around hiding.
“Tell me everything.””
Sarah nodded.
“I was your assistant.””
“I know.””
“You don’t know.””
She walked to the table.
“You were more than my boss.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You trusted me.””
She opened a box.
Inside were photographs.
Me.
Sarah.
Emily.
Before the accident.
Emily was younger.
Smiling.
Healthy.
I picked up one photo.
“You were around my daughter.””
“All the time.””
“Why don’t I remember?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because Victor erased those memories.””
The anger returned.
“How?””
She took a breath.
“Victor discovered something about your company.””
“What?””
“That someone inside your organization was stealing money.””
I stared.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Victor.””
The room went silent.
“My own partner.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because he found out you were close to discovering him.””
I remembered the investigation.
The documents.
The scandal.
The betrayal.
But everything had always pointed somewhere else.
Whitmore Financial.
Not Victor.
“He manipulated the evidence.””
Sarah nodded.
“He wanted you to destroy Daniel Whitmore.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was his biggest competitor.””
I felt sick.
All these years.
I thought I was exposing corruption.
I was helping someone remove an enemy.
“Then the accident…”
Sarah looked down.
“Was Victor’s plan.””
My hands tightened.
“What happened?””
She swallowed.
“I found proof.””
“What proof?””
“Payments. Messages. Everything.””
“Why didn’t you go to the police?””
“I tried.””
She looked at me.
“Victor found out.””
The room became quiet.
“He threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“And my daughter?””
Sarah’s face changed.
“She was never supposed to be hurt.””
I stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah looked away.
“Victor planned for you to crash.””
My stomach dropped.
“He didn’t know Emily was in the car?””
“He knew.””
The words destroyed me.
“He knew?””
Sarah nodded.
“He believed losing everything would break you.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why save her?””
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“Because I couldn’t let him win.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“When the car went off the road, I was following you.””
I froze.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew something was wrong.””
She looked at the floor.
“I pulled Emily out before the car caught fire.””
I closed my eyes.
The memory came back.
Smoke.
Rain.
Someone holding me.
A voice.
A woman saying my name.
Sarah.
But then…
Nothing.
“What happened to me?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Victor found you.””
My blood ran cold.
“He got there before the ambulance.””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He told the doctors you had severe confusion and needed treatment.””
My fists clenched.
“He controlled the narrative.””
“Yes.””
“Then he erased me.””
Sarah nodded.
“He didn’t erase you.””
She looked at me.
“He buried you.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Sir, we have a problem.””
“What?””
“Victor knows Sarah is alive.””
My eyes moved toward her.
“How?””
A pause.
“Because he sent us a message.””
“What message?””
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“He said…”
I waited.
“He said, ‘If Sarah tells him the final piece, Emily won’t be the only thing he loses.’”
I looked at Sarah.
She went pale.
“What?””
I asked.
She whispered:
“There’s still something Victor knows.””
“What?””

Sarah looked terrified.
“The reason Emily survived.””
