Chapter 12: The Final Piece of the Puzzle
The safe house became a prison.
Not because we were trapped.
Because we finally understood the size of the enemy.
For eight years, I believed my life had been destroyed by one event.
One accident.
One mistake.
But the truth was worse.
My entire reality had been carefully constructed.
Every person.
Every lie.
Every missing memory.
Someone had built a fake world around me.
And I had lived inside it.
Sarah sat across from me, staring at the old photographs.
“I should have come back sooner.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Victor convinced me you were safer without me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Safer?””
She nodded sadly.
“He told me if I appeared, he would go after Emily again.””
That stopped me.
“He threatened my daughter?””
“Yes.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
A photo.
Victor.
Standing outside Emily’s school.
Taken that morning.
My blood turned cold.
“He’s close.””
Sarah looked at the image.
“No.””
“What?””
She stared at the picture.
“That’s not Victor.””
I looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
She pointed.
“Look at his hand.””
I zoomed in.
A small scar.
A ring.
Something familiar.
“That’s not Victor?””
Sarah shook her head.
“That’s someone working for him.””
My anger rose.
“Then where is Victor?””
Nobody answered.
Because we both knew.
He was somewhere else.
Watching.
Waiting.
Marcus entered the room.
“Sir.””
I turned.
“What?””
“We found the financial records.””
“From Victor?””
“Yes.””
He placed a laptop on the table.
“There’s something strange.””
I opened the files.
Thousands of transactions.
Payments.
Offshore accounts.
Then I saw the name.
“Emily Cross.””
My heart stopped.
“What is this?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Payments made after the accident.””
“To who?””
“We don’t know.””
I stared at the screen.
The account wasn’t receiving money.
It was holding it.
Someone had created a fund.
For Emily.
“For what?””
Sarah stepped closer.
Her face changed.
“Oh no.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“Victor wasn’t trying to destroy you.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
“He was trying to control you.””
The realization came slowly.
The accident.
The threats.
The attacks.
Everything.
Not revenge.
Control.
“He wanted something from me.””
Sarah nodded.
“Your company.””
I looked at the documents.
“But why involve Emily?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because Emily was the only thing you would never sacrifice.””
Silence.
Then Marcus interrupted.
“Sir.””
“What?””
“We found Victor.””
I turned.
“Where?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
“He sent his location.””
That made no sense.
“He wants us to find him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because he sent another message.””
I stared.
“What did it say?””
Marcus looked at me.
“He said, ‘Come collect the truth your daughter deserves.’”
An hour later, I stood inside an abandoned warehouse on the edge of Dallas.
The place was empty.
Too empty.
Sarah stood behind me.
“This feels wrong.””
“It is.””
Then the lights turned on.
Victor Hale stood above us on a metal platform.
Older.
Tired.
But still wearing the same smile I remembered.
My former friend.
My former partner.
The man who destroyed my life.
“Alexander.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He smiled sadly.
“That’s the question you should have asked eight years ago.””
“You hurt my daughter.””
His expression changed.
“I saved your daughter.””
The anger almost blinded me.
“Don’t say that.””
“I did.””
“You caused the accident.””
“Yes.””
The confession was so casual it made me sick.
“Why?””
Victor walked down the stairs slowly.
“Because I needed you to disappear.””
“For what?””
He stopped in front of me.
“To protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked at Sarah.
“She never told you everything.””
Sarah froze.
I turned.
“What does he mean?””
Victor smiled.
“Ask her why Emily was really in the car that night.””
I looked at Sarah.
She looked away.
My heart sank.
“Sarah.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
Victor stepped closer.
“The accident wasn’t because of me.””
I stared.
“You just admitted it.””
“I caused the crash.””
A pause.
“But I didn’t know what was inside that car.””
The warehouse became silent.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor looked at me.
“Emily wasn’t the target.””
My blood ran cold.
“Then who was?””
Victor’s answer came quietly.
“You.”” Then he looked at Sarah.
“And she knows why.””
Sarah whispered:
“Alexander…”
I stared at her.
“What did you hide from me?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“The night of the accident…”
A pause.
“You weren’t driving Emily home.””
My heart stopped.
“You were transporting evidence.””
May you like
Victor smiled.
“And that evidence was worth killing for.””
