Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Secret

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

The only sound was the old clock on Patricia's wall ticking between us.

Looking back, I think that was the moment everything changed.

Not when I found Mia alone.

Not when I saw the messages.

Not even when I learned Patricia had hidden information about my daughter.

It was when I realized there was an entire part of Mia's story that had existed without me.

A story someone else had controlled.

Daniel stepped closer to his mother.

“Who?””

Patricia looked away.

“His name is Lucas Bennett.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that name.

Not because I had seen him recently.

Because I remembered him.

The boy I dated before Daniel.

The person who disappeared after our breakup.

The person I hadn't heard from in almost seven years.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

Patricia looked at me.

“You never told Daniel.””

“Because there was nothing to tell.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don't know that.””

Daniel looked between us.

“You knew about him?””

“I knew who he was before I married you,” I said.

Patricia crossed her arms.

“And you knew he contacted me.””

I turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked confused too.

“When?””

Patricia sighed.

“After Mia was born.””

My mind raced.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You're lying.””

Her face tightened.

“You think I wanted this?””

That question angered me.

“You kept this from us.””

“I protected Daniel.””

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“You protected me by hiding something about my daughter?””

Patricia looked hurt.

“I protected this family.””

“No,” he said.

“You protected control.””

The room went quiet.

For once, Patricia had no immediate response.

She looked older.

Smaller.

But I couldn't feel sorry for her.

Not yet.

Because every time I thought about Mia standing alone beside that pillar, I remembered one thing.

Patricia had made choices.

Again and again.

Finally, she spoke.

“Lucas found out about Mia when she was three.””

I stared.

“How?””

“He saw a picture.””

“Where?””

Patricia hesitated.

Daniel noticed.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“He contacted me.””

My heart started pounding.

“You talked to him?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Because he wanted to meet her.””

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Daniel looked sick.

“So you stopped him?””

Patricia didn't answer.

That was enough.

“You stopped him from seeing his daughter?””

“He wasn't stable.””

“According to who?””

“According to me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You decided everything.””

Patricia looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No,” he said.

“You were trying to own the situation.””

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

The same number that had sent the messages.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

A voice I hadn't heard in years.

“Emily?””

My entire body froze.

Daniel looked at me.

Patricia looked terrified.

“Lucas?””

A long silence.

Then he said:

“I've been trying to reach you for years.””

I couldn't speak.

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because your daughter deserves to know the truth.””

I looked at Patricia.

She was shaking.

Lucas continued.

“But before I explain everything…”

A pause.

Then the words that changed everything.

“Ask your mother-in-law why she lied about the night Mia was born.””
