Chapter 10: The Secret I Buried
I thought I knew every painful chapter of my own life.
I was wrong.
Some memories don't disappear because they are forgotten.
They disappear because someone helps you bury them.
And when they come back, they don't return quietly.
They tear everything open.
I sat in Patricia's living room holding the photograph of myself, staring at a message written on the back.
*Emily, I know the truth about what happened the night you disappeared.*
My hands were shaking.
Daniel noticed.
“Emily?””
I couldn't look at him.
Because there was a part of me that wanted to grab his hand and tell him everything.
But there was another part that felt like I was standing at the edge of a cliff.
A cliff I had spent years avoiding.
Patricia sat across from us.
For once, she wasn't trying to control the conversation.
She looked nervous.
Almost afraid.
“What happened?”” Daniel asked.
I swallowed.
“When I was twenty-two, I left my hometown.””
“I know that,” Daniel said.
“But you don't know why.””
The room became quiet.
I looked at the photograph again.
“Everyone thought I left because I wanted a fresh start.””
Patricia looked down.
“But that wasn't the whole truth.””
Daniel waited.
I took a breath.
“There was a man named Marcus Hale.””
His name felt strange coming out of my mouth after so many years.
“He was older than me. More confident. He knew exactly what to say.””
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“He hurt you?””
I looked at him.
“Not in the way you're thinking.””
I paused.
“He lied to me.””
I explained how Marcus had promised me a future.
How he convinced me he cared.
How I discovered he had been hiding another relationship.
But the worst part wasn't the betrayal.
It was what happened afterward.
“When I confronted him, he threatened me.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What did he say?””
I looked at Patricia.
“She knows.””
Patricia didn't deny it.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“You knew about Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before Emily met you.””
My anger returned.
“Why didn't you tell him?””
Patricia looked at me.
“Because Emily begged me not to.””
Daniel turned.
I nodded slowly.
“That part is true.””
The room went silent.
For the first time, Patricia wasn't the only person holding a secret.
I had one too.
“I was scared,” I admitted.
“Marcus knew things about me that I didn't want anyone to know.””
Daniel softened.
“What things?””
I looked at the floor.
“I was pregnant.””
The silence was immediate.
Daniel stopped moving.
Patricia closed her eyes.
I continued before fear could stop me.
“I didn't know who the father was.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Mia?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Mia came years later.””
I saw the confusion on his face.
“Then what happened?””
I remembered that time.
The fear.
The loneliness.
The shame I carried because I believed everyone would judge me.
“I lost the baby.””
Daniel reached for my hand.
But I wasn't finished.
“Marcus knew. He used it against me.””
The photograph slipped slightly in my fingers.
“He told me nobody would believe me if I talked about him.””
Patricia finally spoke.
“That is why I helped her.””
I looked at her.
“And then you used that information against me.””
Her face changed.
Because she knew I was right.
“You found out about Mia and thought you had the right to control everything.””
Patricia whispered:
“I was trying to prevent another mistake.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“You were trying to become the person who decides what everyone deserves to know.””
Patricia looked away.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
Older.
Rougher.
But familiar.
“Emily.””
My entire body froze.
Daniel saw my face.
“Who is it?””
I couldn't speak.
Because I knew.
Marcus was on the phone.
“You finally found out,” he said.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“How do you have this number?””
A quiet laugh.
“Patricia was never very good at keeping secrets.””
I looked at her.
Her face turned pale.
Marcus continued.
“But she was right about one thing.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
A pause.

Then:
“Your daughter isn't the only person I've been looking for.””
