Chapter 5: The Name We Never Heard
I couldn't breathe.
Not because of the photograph.
Because of the words written behind it.
The truth about Mia's father.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mia's father?””
I stared at him.
“You're her father.””
His face went pale.
“I know.””
The room became painfully quiet.
We had been married for eight years.
Daniel had been there through every doctor appointment, every sleepless night, every first step, every birthday candle.
He was the man who taught Mia how to ride a bike.
The man who held her when she had nightmares.
The man who whispered that she was his greatest gift.
So why did Patricia have a file about Mia's father?
I grabbed the envelope.
Inside were papers.
Old documents.
A hospital record.
And a letter.
The handwriting belonged to Patricia.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
*Daniel,*
*There are things you don't know about the day Mia was born.*
I stopped reading.
Daniel took the letter.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
He didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he whispered:
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
He looked at me.
“That I wasn't Mia's biological father.””
The words hung between us.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel kept reading.
The letter explained that Patricia had discovered an old message years ago between me and someone from my past.
Someone named Lucas.
I immediately knew who that was.
Lucas was my college boyfriend.
The relationship ended before I met Daniel.
Before marriage.
Before Mia.
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Did you know?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Because it was true.
I had never questioned Mia's parentage.
The timing had never raised any concerns.
Mia was my daughter.
Daniel was the man who raised her.
That was all that mattered.
But Patricia had known about the possibility.
And she had kept it.
Why?
Daniel found another document.
A DNA test request.
Never completed.
Never submitted.
“She was planning something,” he said.
My stomach turned.
“She wanted proof.””
“For what?””
Before he could answer, we heard a sound downstairs.
The front door closing.
We froze.
“Someone's here.””
Daniel grabbed the papers.
“Mom?””
No answer.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Coming up the stairs.
Patricia appeared in the doorway.
She looked at the box.
Then at us.
For the first time since I met her, she looked afraid.
“What are you doing?””
Daniel held up the letter.
“You tell me.””
Her expression changed.
“I told you not to dig into things you don't understand.””
I stepped forward.
“You left my daughter alone because you were angry.””
Patricia looked at me.
“That has nothing to do with this.””
“It has everything to do with this.””
She looked at Daniel.
“You need to listen to me.””
“No,” he said.
His voice was calm.
“You need to explain.””
Patricia took a breath.
Then she said something that made both of us freeze.
“Mia's biological father is not the person you think he is.””
I stared at her.
“Who is he?””
Patricia looked at Daniel.
May you like
And quietly answered:
“Someone who has been looking for her.””
