Chapter 8: The Letter She Tried To Burn

I crossed the room before I realized I was moving.

“Give it to me.””

Evelyn tightened her grip on the envelope.

“No.””

One word.

Calm.

Almost maternal.

As though she were protecting me.

Michael stepped beside me.

“Mom, what are you doing?””

Evelyn’s eyes flicked toward him.

“What I should have done years ago.””

Jason came through the doorway behind us.

“Mom, give Sarah the letter.””

Charles appeared near the stairs.

His face was gray.

“Evelyn.””

She ignored him.

I looked at the envelope.

My father’s handwriting was unmistakable.

Sarah.

Just my name.

Nothing else.

My chest tightened.

I hadn’t seen his handwriting in years.

And Evelyn was holding his last words inches from a fire.

“That belongs to me.””

She shook her head.

“You think it does.””

My anger surged.

“My father wrote my name on it.””

“Your father made mistakes.””

“Then let me read them.””

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

Michael moved toward her.

“Mom.””

“Stay out of this.””

He stopped.

A strange expression crossed his face.

“You told me the letter was gone.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I told you what you needed to hear.””

I turned toward Michael.

“You knew she had it?””

“No.””

“But you knew about it.””

“Yes.””

Every answer seemed to uncover another lie.

Charles finally walked forward.

“Evelyn, enough.””

She looked at her husband.

“You agreed.””

“I agreed to protect Michael.””

“And this protects him.””

My stomach turned.

There it was.

Again.

Protect Michael.

Always Michael.

No matter who got hurt.

No matter what had to be hidden.

I stepped closer.

“What did my father know about Michael?””

Evelyn said nothing.

“Why would his letter threaten your son?””

Still nothing.

Michael stared at his mother.

“What did you do?””

Evelyn looked offended.

“Everything I did was for this family.””

Jason shook his head.

“You always say that right before explaining something terrible.””

“Jason!””

“No, Mom.””

His voice cracked.

“You watched Michael hit Sarah and blamed her. Now you’re trying to burn a dead man’s letter.””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“You’re too young to understand what families require.””

“I’m thirty-one.””

“Then start acting like it.””

Jason laughed bitterly.

“Meaning what? Lie better?””

Charles stepped between them.

“Enough!””

Everyone went silent.

He looked at me.

Then at the envelope.

“Sarah deserves the truth.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“You promised me.””

Charles looked exhausted.

“I’ve spent two years regretting that promise.””

Michael’s voice dropped.

“Dad, what did you do?””

Charles sat down.

For the first time, he looked old.

“I accessed the trust.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“You pretended to represent me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes moved toward Michael.

“Because he asked me to.””

Michael stepped back.

“Dad.””

“You came to me after you discovered the trust.””

“That’s not what happened.””

Charles continued as though Michael hadn’t spoken.

“You wanted to know whether Sarah could access the principal immediately.””

I looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

“I was trying to understand our finances.””

“Our finances?””

My voice rose.

“You secretly investigated an inheritance I didn’t know existed.””

Michael looked desperate.

“We were married.””

“That doesn’t make my identity yours.””

Evelyn suddenly spoke.

“Michael was protecting himself.””

I turned.

“From what?””

“From being left with nothing.””

I stared at her.

“He was cheating on me.””

Her expression barely changed.

“That came later.””

The room went silent.

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

“What did you just say?””

Evelyn realized her mistake.

Michael looked furious.

“Mom.””

But I stepped closer.

“Say it again.””

She looked away.

I understood.

The affair wasn’t the beginning.

The money was.

Michael had discovered my inheritance before Lauren.

Before six months of secret hotel rooms.

Before messages about waking up together.

The financial betrayal came first.

“How long?”” I asked.

Michael didn’t answer.

“How long were you planning to leave me?””

“I wasn’t.””

“Stop lying!””

My voice echoed through the house.

He flinched.

Good.

I wanted the truth to hurt somebody besides me.

Then Evelyn made her decision.

Her hand moved toward the fireplace.

Jason shouted.

Michael lunged forward.

The envelope slipped from Evelyn’s fingers.

It landed on the stone hearth.

I grabbed it before she could.

Nobody moved.

I held it against my chest.

My father’s letter.

Mine.

Finally.

Evelyn stared at me.

“You’re going to wish I burned it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with something I hadn’t expected.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Because your father knew exactly who Michael was before you married him.””

I looked at my husband.

He went completely still.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were four handwritten pages.

And a photograph.

The photograph fell onto the floor.

I bent down and picked it up.

May you like

My father was standing beside a much younger Michael.

The date printed on the back was seven years before Michael claimed we first met.
