Chapter 4: The Woman Behind The Affair

I stood outside Evelyn’s house with snow falling onto my coat, listening to the woman who had destroyed my marriage tell me my husband had lied to her too.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.

My mind was trying to process something that didn’t make sense.

Lauren was supposed to be the other woman.

The enemy.

The person I had spent hours imagining.

But the fear in her voice didn’t sound like someone who had won.

It sounded like someone who had just discovered she had been used.

“Sarah?”” Lauren whispered.

“Are you still there?””

I tightened my grip on my phone.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a long pause.

Then she answered quietly.

“Because I think we were both victims of the same person.””

The word felt strange.

Victims.

I didn’t want to hear it.

I didn’t want anything connecting me to Lauren.

Not after everything.

“You were sleeping with my husband for six months.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I’m not asking you to forgive me.””

I looked back through the doorway.

Michael was still standing there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Probably hoping I would come back inside and make this easier for him.

But I didn’t move.

“What do you want, Lauren?””

“I want you to hear the truth.””

The wind blew harder.

I stepped away from the house.

“Talk.””

She took a deep breath.

“Michael told me you two were separated.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“He told me your marriage was already over. He said you were staying together because of finances and appearances.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I had heard that lie before.

Not from Lauren.

From Michael.

A few months ago, when I confronted him about why he was always distant, he told me we were going through a difficult phase.

He said every marriage had seasons.

He said we would get through it.

Apparently, while he was telling me that, he was telling someone else a completely different story.

“He told me he was planning to leave you,” Lauren continued.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Of course he did.””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I looked at the snow-covered driveway.

“He told me he was working late because he was building a future for us.””

My voice became colder.

“He was building one without me.””

Lauren was silent.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Sarah, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Michael wasn’t just hiding me from you.””

I waited.

“He was hiding someone else from both of us.””

My heart started racing.

“What are you talking about?””

“I found out two weeks ago.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“I saw messages between him and another person.””

I looked toward the house again.

Michael had stepped closer to the door.

He couldn’t hear me.

But he looked nervous.

“Who?””

Lauren hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Your husband’s business partner.””

I froze.

“David?””

“Yes.””

That name hit me differently.

David wasn’t just Michael’s friend.

He was someone I had welcomed into our home.

Someone who had sat at our kitchen table.

Someone who had hugged me and called me family.

“What were the messages about?””

Lauren lowered her voice.

“Money.””

Everything suddenly connected.

The hidden accounts.

The paperwork.

The secret transfers.

The strange messages from Evelyn about keeping things calm until the paperwork was complete.

Michael wasn’t just planning to leave.

He was preparing something.

Something bigger.

“Sarah,” Lauren said.

“What?””

“You need to check your house.””

I frowned.

“My house?””

“Before Michael realizes you know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

She whispered:

“Because I think he already started taking things from you.””

The call ended.

I stood there staring at my phone.

For years, I thought my biggest mistake was trusting the wrong man.

But now I wondered if I had missed something much bigger.

I got into my car and drove home.

The entire ride, memories played in my mind.

Michael convincing me to combine our finances.

Michael insisting he should handle investments.

Michael saying, “Trust me, Sarah. I’m doing this for us.””

By the time I reached our house, my hands were shaking.

The lights were off.

The place that was supposed to feel like home suddenly felt unfamiliar.

I unlocked the door.

And immediately noticed something.

The hallway looked different.

Not much.

Just enough.

A drawer was open.

A picture frame was missing.

I walked slowly into the living room.

Our wedding photo was gone.

My chest tightened.

Then I saw the envelope sitting on the table.

My name was written on it.

Not by Michael.

By someone else.

I opened it.

And inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Michael.

Standing outside a lawyer’s office.

With Evelyn beside him.

And the date on the picture was from three months earlier.
