Chapter 6: The Inheritance I Never Knew About

I spent the next ten minutes standing across from my husband, waiting for him to explain something that should never have come from his mouth.

My father.

A trust.

A secret.

Three words that didn’t belong together.

“My father died with nothing,” I said.

Michael shook his head slowly.

“That’s what you were told.””

The room felt smaller.

“Who told me that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Your mother.””

I stared at him.

“My mother passed away five years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you bringing her into this?””

He walked toward the kitchen.

I didn’t move.

“Because she knew.””

I followed him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice became quieter.

“Your father owned property before he died. Property that increased in value over the years.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“Your mother didn’t want you involved.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because she didn’t trust you with it.””

The words hurt.

Not because I believed them.

Because he was using my dead parents to manipulate me.

“You’re lying.””

He looked frustrated.

“Sarah, I’m trying to help you.””

I laughed.

“You hit me at Christmas dinner.””

His face changed.

“I lost control.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“You showed me who you were.””

Silence.

For once, he didn’t have an answer.

Then my phone rang.

Jason.

I answered immediately.

“Jason?””

His voice sounded serious.

“Sarah, I found something.””

My eyes stayed on Michael.

“What?””

“I called an old family attorney.””

My heart skipped.

“What attorney?””

“Your father’s attorney.””

Michael’s face changed.

I noticed.

And he noticed that I noticed.

Jason continued.

“He confirmed something.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father did create a trust.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked away.

My entire body went cold.

“How much?””

Jason hesitated.

“I don’t know the exact amount.””

“Jason.””

“He said the value is significant.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything started making sense.

The financial documents.

The secret planning.

The lawyer visits.

Michael wasn’t just trying to leave.

He was trying to control what belonged to me.

I looked at my husband.

“How long have you known?””

He stayed silent.

“How long?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Two years.””

The answer hit me like a wave.

Two years.

He had known for two years.

Two years of pretending.

Two years of pretending he loved me.

Two years of waiting.

“For what?”” I asked.

Michael looked at me.

“To access it.””

The honesty shocked even him.

Maybe he hadn’t meant to say it.

But he did.

And now I finally had the truth.

I stepped back.

“You never loved me.””

His face softened.

“That’s not fair.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“That’s the only thing that’s fair.””

He reached toward me.

I moved away.

“Don’t.””

Michael stopped.

For the first time, I saw something in his eyes.

Not love.

Fear.

Because he realized something.

The woman he thought he could control was gone.

“I need to tell you something else,” he said.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Your father didn’t just leave you money.””

My heart tightened.

“What else?””

He looked toward the folder.

Then back at me.

“He left a letter.””

I stared at him.

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Michael didn’t answer.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever was inside that letter…

was the one thing he was desperate to keep from me.

Then my phone received a message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

May you like

And the moment I read it, I understood why Michael had been terrified all night.

*“Sarah, your husband is not the only person who betrayed your family.””*
