Chapter 8: The Friend Standing In The Dark
For a moment, nobody moved.
Andrew stood there in the darkness, his face impossible to read.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Just tired.
Like someone who had carried a burden for too long.
I stared at him.
“You followed me.””
Andrew looked at Evelyn.
“She was always going to tell you.””
Evelyn stepped back.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
Andrew ignored her.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I laughed.
“After twelve years of lies, you want me to listen?””
His expression tightened.
“I never lied about loving Lily.””
“That’s not the same as telling the truth.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“Why?””
Andrew looked down.
“Because Rachel asked me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She knew she was in danger.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She asked you to protect Lily. Not hide the truth forever.””
Andrew closed his eyes.
“She knew they would come after Daniel.””
“After me?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“After Lily.””
The room went quiet.
Andrew stepped closer.
“The people behind this have influence everywhere. Hospitals. Schools. Government offices.””
He pointed toward the file.
“That information could destroy powerful people.””
I stared at him.
“So you erased my daughter’s history?””
“I protected her identity.””
“You stole her story.””
His face fell.
That sentence hit him.
“You think I don’t know what that cost?””
I looked away.
“Do you?””
Andrew’s voice broke.
“I held Rachel’s hand while she died.””
The room went silent.
“I promised her I would keep Lily safe.””
I looked at him.
“She trusted me because you couldn’t.””
I felt anger rising.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say that.””
I stepped forward.
“My wife died believing you would protect us. She didn’t ask you to become another person who controlled my life.””
Andrew had no answer.
And that told me everything.
Evelyn finally spoke.
“There is something else.””
Both of us looked at her.
She held the file tightly.
“Rachel wasn’t just investigating the experiment.””
“What else?”” I asked.
“She found out someone inside your company was involved.””
My eyes narrowed.
“My company?””
Andrew became still.
Evelyn nodded.
“The funding moved through several companies. One of them was connected to Cross Technologies.””
I looked at Andrew.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“You were my first investor.””
“Yes.””
“Your money helped build my company.””
“Daniel, I didn’t know.””
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But trust was a fragile thing.
Once broken, every piece looked dangerous.
My phone buzzed.
Marcus.
I answered.
“Daniel.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“You need to leave.””
“Why?””
“I traced the school records. The person who accessed Lily’s files wasn’t a random hacker.””
A pause.
“It was someone with administrator access.””
My eyes moved toward Andrew.
“Who?””
Marcus answered.
“The principal of Hawthorne Academy.””
I froze.
Robert Whitmore.
The man who claimed he wanted to help.
The man who acted shocked.
The man who had known more than he admitted.
Before I could speak, Evelyn grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Someone is here.””
A vehicle stopped outside.
Then another.
Headlights cut through the windows.
Andrew moved toward the door.
“How many?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Too many.””
I looked at the file in her hands.
The truth was right there.
Twelve years of secrets.
Twelve years of pain.
But before I could finally uncover everything, someone outside shouted:
“Dr. Hart!””
My blood ran cold.
The voice was familiar.
Not because I knew the person.
Because Lily knew him.
I heard Andrew whisper:
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He stared at the door.
May you like
And then he said the name that made my entire body go numb.
“Ethan Blake’s father.””
