Chapter 13: The Woman I Buried Twice
I stared at the location on my phone.
A place outside Chicago.
An abandoned research facility.
The same kind of place where my daughter’s life had been changed before she even had a chance to begin.
My first instinct was to run there.
My second instinct was to bring everyone I trusted.
But Rachel’s words echoed in my mind.
*Come alone.*
I hated it.
Every part of me hated it.
Because for twelve years, I had lived with one fear.
Losing Lily.
And now the woman who gave me Lily was asking me to walk into danger by myself.
But Rachel had never been careless.
Not with me.
Not with our daughter.
So I went.
The facility sat hidden behind miles of empty land.
No signs.
No security.
Nothing that suggested it had once held secrets powerful enough to destroy families.
I stepped through the broken entrance.
The air smelled like dust and rust.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
I turned.
And she was there.
Rachel.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
I had imagined this moment a thousand times.
Her walking through the door.
Her saying she was okay.
Her explaining everything.
But reality was different.
Because when you lose someone, you don’t just lose their presence.
You lose the future you imagined with them.
And suddenly, all those lost years stood between us.
“Daniel.””
Her voice broke.
I couldn’t move.
“You’re alive.””
She nodded.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words.
That was all.
After twelve years.
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“You’re sorry?””
Rachel looked down.
“I know.””
“You’re sorry?””
My voice rose.
“You let me bury you.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You let Lily grow up without her mother.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe I lost my family.””
“I know.””
The anger finally came.
Not loud.
Not violent.
Just years of pain finally finding a way out.
“Why?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Because they were watching.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
The words still hurt.
Even now.
“William was not alone.””
She stepped closer.
“The research program was bigger than you know.””
“Then tell me.””
Rachel nodded.
“I will.””
We sat inside the old facility where everything began.
Rachel told me everything.
After Lily was born, she discovered what the researchers had done.
The experiment.
The cover-up.
The money.
But the worst part was not what happened.
It was why.
“They weren’t trying to create a treatment,” Rachel said.
I looked at her.
“Then what?””
“They were trying to create a prediction system.””
I frowned.
“For what?””
“Human development.””
She looked down.
“They believed they could identify certain traits before birth. Intelligence. Behavior. Physical abilities.””
I felt sick.
“And Lily?””
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“Lily was one of the first children they tested.””
I looked away.
My daughter.
A number.
A file.
A result.
Rachel reached for my hand.
“She was never their experiment.””
I looked at her.
“She was their mistake.””
“What?””
“They expected her to fail.””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“But she survived.””
A small smile appeared.
“That was the one thing they could never control.””
I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Rachel looked away.
“Because someone close to you found me.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“Andrew.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The pain returned.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because William forced him.””
I stared.
“My father?””
“William threatened to destroy you.””
She explained.
Andrew was trapped.
William controlled information.
Money.
Power.
He told Andrew that if Rachel returned, Lily would disappear.
So Andrew helped Rachel stay hidden.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he believed it was the only way.
I sat silently.
All this time, I thought Andrew betrayed me.
But he had been carrying the same impossible choice Rachel made.
Protect Lily.
Even if it destroyed everything else.
“Why come back now?””
Rachel’s face changed.
“Because they found her.””
I looked at her.
“Lily.””
She nodded.
“After the incident at Hawthorne, they knew she was becoming impossible to control.””
A chill went through me.
“So the bullying…”
“Was not random.””
I already knew.
But hearing it hurt.
“They wanted to scare her away.””
“They wanted to make her disappear.””
Rachel nodded.
Then she reached into her coat.
She handed me a small device.
“What is this?””
“The original research files.””
I looked at it.
“Proof.””
“Yes.””
“Against who?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
“Everyone involved.””
Before I could respond, the lights inside the facility suddenly turned on.
Rachel froze.
My instincts kicked in.
Someone was here.
Then a voice echoed through the building.
“You always were difficult to kill, Rachel.””
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
Not Richard Blake.
Not William.
Someone else.
Someone who had been watching from the beginning.
Rachel whispered:
“He found us.””
The man stepped into the doorway.
And I finally understood.
May you like
The person behind everything had never been hidden.
He had been standing beside us all along.
