Chapter 5: The Woman From Lily’s Past

I arrived at Hawthorne Academy faster than I had ever driven anywhere in my life.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was angry.

The kind of anger that does not burn loudly.

The kind that becomes cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Lily was inside the counselor’s office when I arrived.

The moment she heard my footsteps, she stood.

“Dad?””

I rushed to her.

“Are you okay?””

“Yes.””

“Did anyone talk to you?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared me more than anything.

“Lily.””

She took a breath.

“A woman came to see me.””

My heart dropped.

“What woman?””

“She said she knew my mother.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“When?””

“During lunch.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“She asked me not to.””

I looked at the counselor.

She immediately shook her head.

“I didn’t know about any visitor.””

That meant someone had entered the school without permission.

Again.

I knelt beside Lily.

“What did she say?””

Lily thought carefully.

“She said my mother wanted me to have something.””

“What?””

“She gave me a necklace.””

My eyes widened.

“Where is it?””

Lily reached into her pocket.

A small silver necklace rested in her palm.

I recognized it instantly.

Because I had seen it before.

Rachel wore it every day.

Before she died.

My hands shook.

“Lily, where exactly did she say your mother wanted you to have this?””

“She said…”

Lily frowned.

“She said, ‘Your father knows why this belongs to you.’”

I looked at the necklace.

A small symbol was engraved on the back.

A symbol I had not seen in twelve years.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.

When he saw the necklace, his expression changed.

“You found it.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You knew this existed?””

“No.””

“Then how did she get it?””

I stepped closer.

“Marcus.””

He looked away.

“Daniel, there’s something I didn’t tell you.””

I hated those words.

Every major disaster in my life seemed to begin with them.

“What?””

He opened his folder.

“There were rumors about Rachel before she died.””

I stared at him.

“What kind of rumors?””

“That she discovered something about Hawthorne Academy.””

I frowned.

“Hawthorne?””

He nodded.

“She believed wealthy families were using the school to hide things.””

I looked at the necklace again.

“What things?””

Marcus placed another document on the table.

A financial report.

My eyes moved across the page.

Donations.

Payments.

Private accounts.

Then I saw a name.

*Blake Foundation.*

Ethan Blake’s family.

I looked up.

“The boy who took Lily’s cane.””

Marcus nodded.

“The same family.””

The room went silent.

This was no longer a coincidence.

The three students.

The hidden records.

The threats.

Rachel’s necklace.

Everything connected.

But there was one question I could not answer.

Why Lily?

Why my daughter?

That night, I returned to the old house where Rachel and I lived before Lily was born.

I rarely came here anymore.

Too many memories.

Too much pain.

The house smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Dust.

Rain.

I walked into Rachel’s study.

The room nobody had touched.

Her books still lined the shelves.

Her handwriting still covered the papers on her desk.

I searched through everything.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

A loose piece of wood beneath the desk.

I pulled it open.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

My heart raced.

Rachel had hidden something.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

*Daniel. Open this only if Lily is in danger.*

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Rachel’s handwriting.

The first line nearly stopped my breathing.

*If you are reading this, they know Lily survived.*

I kept reading.

*The people who hurt us will try to convince you that Lily is just a child. They are wrong. Lily is proof of what they did.*

I looked at the date.

The letter had been written twelve years ago.

Before Lily was born.

Before Rachel died.

At the bottom was one final sentence:

*Daniel, the man you trust most is the reason our daughter was hidden.*

I dropped the letter.

Because there was only one person Rachel had trusted besides me.

And if she was right…

May you like

I had spent twelve years protecting Lily from the world.

But I had never protected her from him.
