Chapter 5: The Name On The File

Nobody spoke after I read the message.

Not even the officer.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

This wasn’t just about Mrs. Hart.

Someone else had been involved.

I turned slowly toward Principal Dawson.

“Who is this?””

He stared at my phone.

“I don’t know.””

“Try again.””

“I said I don’t know.””

The officer stepped between us.

“Principal Dawson, we’re going to need you to explain why there are hidden files in a locked room.””

His face tightened.

“I didn’t put them there.””

“Then who did?””

He looked toward the shelves.

“I thought Mrs. Hart was just keeping discipline records.””

I almost laughed.

“Discipline records?””

I picked up a folder.

Inside were notes.

Not about behavior.

About children.

Their fears.

Their families.

Their weaknesses.

One page had Logan’s name written at the top.

My hands began shaking.

I read it.

*Student: Logan Miller.*

*Observation: Strong attachment to mother. Easy to manipulate through fear of separation.*

I felt something break inside me.

She had been studying my son.

The officer noticed my expression.

“What does it say?””

I handed it to him.

His jaw tightened.

“This is not normal teacher documentation.””

“No,” I said.

“It’s a threat list.””

A sound came from behind us.

A small gasp.

I turned.

Logan was standing in the doorway.

He wasn’t supposed to be there.

“Mommy?””

I immediately walked toward him.

“What are you doing here?””

He pointed at the folder.

“That’s the book.””

“What book?””

“The one Mrs. Hart wrote in.””

I crouched.

“Logan, what did she write?””

He looked terrified.

“She wrote things about everyone.””

“Why?””

“She said teachers needed to know which kids were weak.””

The room became silent.

The officer looked at Principal Dawson.

“How long did you know?””

“I didn’t know about this.””

“You knew enough to ignore complaints.””

The principal looked away.

That was answer enough.

Then Logan looked past me.

At the hidden room.

“She kept the other thing in there.””

I froze.

“What thing?””

He pointed.

“Behind the cabinet.””

Everyone turned.

There was an old wooden cabinet pushed against the wall.

The officer moved it aside.

Behind it was a small metal box.

Locked.

Principal Dawson stepped back.

“I’ve never seen that.””

The officer looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

He opened the box.

Inside were USB drives.

Photographs.

And a small notebook.

I picked it up.

The first page had a date.

Six years ago.

Then a name.

*Emily Carter.*

Noah’s mother.

My breath caught.

“Emily?””

The officer looked at me.

“You know her?””

“No.””

But I knew the name.

Because Noah had whispered it when he saw his mother.

His mother.

Not just some random child.

The next page had a handwritten confession.

Not from Mrs. Hart.

From someone else.

I read the first line.

*I should have stopped her sooner.*

My eyes moved lower.

The signature was at the bottom.

Principal Dawson.

I looked up.

He went completely pale.

“You lied.””

“I can explain.””

“You wrote this.””

He stepped forward.

“Mrs. Miller, listen—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You knew.””

He looked desperate.

“I didn’t know how far it had gone.””

The officer grabbed the notebook.

“Mr. Dawson, you’re going to explain everything.””

Before he could respond, every light in the room shut off.

The old wing went black.

A second later, the emergency lights flickered on.

And from somewhere down the hallway…

A child screamed.

“NO!””

We ran.

The sound came from the old library.

When we reached the door, it slammed shut.

Locked.

The officer pulled the handle.

Nothing.

Then we heard a voice from inside.

Not Mrs. Hart.

Not an adult.

A child.

“Please…”

I looked at Logan.

His face had gone white.

“Mommy…”

“What?””

He pointed at the door.

“That’s the room.””

My heart pounded.

“What room?””

May you like

His voice trembled.

“The room where she keeps the kids.””
