Chapter 12: The Basement Under Room 104

The basement entrance was hidden beneath the old classroom floor.

A place that had existed under the school for years.

A place no parent knew about.

No child should have known about.

Yet somehow, children had been the ones carrying the truth.

When we arrived, police officers surrounded the area.

But the detective pulled me aside.

“Mrs. Miller, you cannot go down there alone.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did Mrs. Hart specifically ask for me?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

She wasn’t trying to escape.

She was trying to finish something.

Daniel stood beside me.

“You’re not going alone.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Neither am I.””

The detective looked between us.

“You all need to understand something.””

He held up a folder.

“We found evidence connecting Mrs. Hart to dozens of incidents.””

“Then arrest her.””

“We will.””

His expression darkened.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph from eight years ago.

Me.

Daniel.

A newborn baby.

And Mrs. Hart.

I felt sick.

“She was there?””

The detective nodded.

“According to hospital records, Mrs. Hart had access to the maternity wing.””

Daniel stared at the picture.

“I never knew.””

I looked at him.

“You found out later.””

“Yes.””

“But not this.””

“No.””

The basement door creaked open.

Everyone turned.

Nobody touched it.

The door slowly swung inward.

A message was written on the wall.

Not with paint.

With photographs.

Pictures of children.

Their names.

Their birthdays.

Their families.

And in the center…

Lily.

I stepped back.

“No.””

The detective whispered:

“She was documenting everything.””

We entered carefully.

The basement was larger than anyone expected.

Rows of shelves filled the room.

Files.

Recordings.

Personal belongings.

A child’s backpack.

A bracelet.

A toy.

Evidence of stolen memories.

Then I saw something that stopped me.

A small pink blanket.

The same one I had brought to the hospital eight years ago.

My hands trembled.

“Lily had this.””

Daniel looked at me.

“How do you know?””

“Because I made it.””

A sound came from the darkness.

Clapping.

Slow.

Calm.

Everyone turned.

Mrs. Hart stepped into the light.

“You finally found it.””

The detective raised his weapon.

“Amelia Hart, you are under arrest.””

She smiled.

“Do you really think I would come here without a plan?””

The lights suddenly shut off.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

Then emergency lights turned on.

Mrs. Hart was gone.

But a screen in the corner flickered to life.

A video began playing.

It showed the hospital.

Eight years earlier.

A nurse carrying a baby.

Then Mrs. Hart entering the room.

And behind her…

A person I never expected to see.

The video paused.

A face appeared.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person standing beside Mrs. Hart that night…

was me.
