Chapter 11: The Sister Who Vanished

I stared at Rebecca like my mind couldn’t process what my eyes were seeing.

Ten years.

Ten years of believing she was gone.

Ten years of grieving someone who was standing right in front of me.

“You’re alive.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I am.””

My voice shook.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her expression broke.

“Because I couldn’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Rachel, listen.””

“No.””

I looked between them.

“How many people have been lying to me?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

Rebecca walked closer.

“I never wanted this.””

“You were involved.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

More than I expected.

“You helped her?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Rebecca looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Mrs. Hart was my daughter’s teacher.””

I froze.

“What?””

“My daughter.””

She swallowed.

“She took her.””

The room went silent.

“She took your daughter too.””

I looked at Lily.

Then at Rebecca.

“What are you saying?””

Rebecca sat down.

“Years ago, Mrs. Hart started collecting information on families. She knew everything about everyone.””

“Why?””

“Control.””

Rebecca’s hands shook.

“She convinced parents she was helping them. She offered support. Advice. Resources.””

“And then?””

“She used their weaknesses against them.””

Daniel added quietly:

“She built trust before destroying it.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“How did you survive?””

Her face changed.

“Because I helped her.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“I was scared.””

She wiped her eyes.

“When she took my daughter, I thought cooperating would bring her back.””

“Did it?””

“No.””

The silence was painful.

“She used me.””

Rebecca looked at Lily.

“She used everyone.””

Lily walked closer.

“Are you my aunt?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily stared at her.

“Why didn’t you save me?””

Rebecca broke down.

And for the first time, I saw something other than secrets.

I saw regret.

“I tried.””

Her voice cracked.

“I tried every day.””

No one spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The police detective.

I answered.

“Mrs. Miller, where are you?””

“Why?””

“We found something at Brookfield.””

“What?””

“A hidden basement beneath Room 104.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“There are records.””

“Of what?””

A pause.

Then:

“Of every child Mrs. Hart ever targeted.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately understood.

“We need to go.””

But Rebecca grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

“She wants you there.””

“Who?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Mrs. Hart.””

The detective’s voice came through the phone.

“Mrs. Miller?””

I answered.

“Yes.””

“We also found a message.””

“What message?””

He hesitated.

“It was addressed to you.””

My grip tightened.

“What does it say?””

The detective read it slowly.

“Rachel, you spent eight years looking for the truth.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“But you never asked why I chose your family.””

I closed my eyes.

Mrs. Hart.

“She knew.””

The detective continued.

“She wrote one more thing.””

“What?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“She said, ‘Come to the basement alone if you want to know what happened the night Daniel disappeared.’”
