Chapter 5: The Chef Who Knew Too Much
Michael Cole arrived at Aurelia at noon wearing a charcoal suit that looked as though it had been borrowed from someone taller.
He stood in the reception area for several seconds, staring through the glass doors into the dining room. Without his chef's coat, he looked less like the confident professional described on his résumé and more like a man who hadn't slept properly in weeks.
Daniel escorted him into my office.
Rebecca was already seated beside me, a yellow legal pad open in front of her.
Michael stopped when he saw her.
“You said Emily would be here.””
“She is,” Rebecca replied.
“I'm her attorney. If you have information relevant to her business, I'm here to make sure the conversation stays appropriate.””
Michael swallowed.
“Fine.””
He sat down and placed both hands on his knees.
I offered him coffee. He declined.
“Mr. Cole,” Rebecca began, “you called Emily last night and mentioned money missing from your former employer. What did you mean?””
Michael stared at the floor.
“I worked at the Copper Table for six years. Started as a line cook, became sous-chef, and eventually ran the kitchen. The owner, Thomas Bell, trusted me with ordering, payroll approvals, and vendor accounts.””
“What happened?”” I asked.
Michael rubbed his palms against his trousers.
“Thomas started noticing discrepancies. Supplier invoices didn't match the deliveries. Payments were going to companies we'd never used. At first, he thought it was a bookkeeping problem.””
“And then?””
“An accountant found almost half a million dollars in transfers. Thomas called me into his office and asked whether I knew anything about them.””
“Did you?””
Michael lifted his eyes.
“I knew the vendors weren't real. But I didn't authorize the payments.””
Rebecca made a note.
“Who did?””
“I thought it was someone in accounting. Then I found an email chain showing that Richard Hale had arranged a meeting with Thomas about a business partnership. Vanessa attended that meeting.””
“Why was your wife involved in your employer's business negotiations?”” I asked.
Michael's expression tightened.
“She told me she was helping Thomas find investors. She'd met Richard through a charity fundraiser.””
“And the signature on the transfer authorization?””
Michael closed his eyes briefly.
“Vanessa signed documents for Thomas that day. She said they were routine approvals. I wasn't in the room when it happened.””
“Did you see her sign the transfer?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know she was involved?””
He reached into his jacket and removed a small flash drive.
“Because I found the emails afterward.””
Rebecca didn't touch it.
“Where did these come from?””
“An old office computer. I copied them before Thomas dismissed me.””
“Why did he dismiss you?””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“Because I was the person who discovered the irregularities. Richard told Thomas that I had been taking kickbacks from suppliers. He produced invoices with my initials on them.””
“Were they genuine?””
“Some were. I'd approved ordinary deliveries. But the companies receiving the money weren't the suppliers we'd ordered from.””
He looked at me.
“I tried to explain. Thomas believed Richard because Richard had invested in another business he owned. I was fired, and the police questioned me. No charges were filed, but the investigation ruined my reputation.””
Rebecca finally reached for the flash drive.
“We'll need to have these files examined by a qualified professional. We can't assume they're complete or authentic.””
“I understand.””
I studied Michael's face.
“Why didn't you tell Thomas everything you knew?””
“I did. He stopped answering my calls.””
“Why didn't you go to the police with the emails?””
“I was afraid.””
The admission came out so quietly that I almost missed it.
Michael looked toward the office door.
“Richard told me he had friends who could make sure I'd never work in a professional kitchen again. He said nobody would hire a chef suspected of stealing from his employer.””
“And Vanessa?”” I asked.
Michael's face changed.
For the first time, I saw something that looked like anger beneath his exhaustion.
“She told me to keep my mouth shut. She said she was protecting our family.””
“Protecting it from what?””
He hesitated.
Then he pulled a folded sheet of paper from his pocket.
“This.””
It was a printed email dated three weeks earlier.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was Richard Hale.
The subject line read: *EMILY CARTER — NEXT STEPS.*
My name sat there in plain black letters.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Michael pushed the page across the desk.
“Vanessa knew you owned Aurelia before she came to the restaurant. She'd been talking about you for months.””
“Why?””
“She wanted Richard to invest in your expansion. He told her you'd refused his offer, and she said she could change your mind.””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“What did she propose?””
Michael pointed to the email.
I read the first paragraph.
Emily has always been easy to provoke. If she feels publicly challenged, she'll make an emotional decision. Once she creates a scene, we can use the incident to question her judgment and credibility with potential partners.
I read it again.
The napkin.
The public confrontation.
The demand to speak to the owner.
It hadn't necessarily been an impulsive act of cruelty.
It might have been a test.
Michael watched me carefully.
“She wanted you to lose your temper. She wanted someone to record it. Then Richard would use the footage to convince investors you were unstable and difficult to work with.””
Rebecca's expression became cold.
“Was there a recording?””
“I don't know.””
I remembered the customers turning toward our table, the phones in people's hands, the way Vanessa had kept escalating even after Daniel defended me.
“Why would she do this for Richard?””
Michael stared at the email.
“Because he promised to erase our debts.””
“What debts?””
He hesitated for so long that Rebecca finally spoke.
“Mr. Cole, we can't help you if you withhold relevant information.””
Michael's shoulders slumped.
“Vanessa borrowed money from Richard to cover losses in a business she was running. She told me it was a small investment. I later found out the debt was much larger.””
“What business?””
“A catering company. It collapsed last year.””
I thought of Vanessa's designer dress, her diamond bracelet, and the way she'd spoken about how much money she spent.
“Was the catering company involved in the Copper Table transfers?””
“I don't know. But Richard used those transfers to keep Vanessa under his control. He told her he'd protect her if she helped him get access to your restaurant.””
Rebecca asked him whether he had any proof of that arrangement.
Michael shook his head.
“Not yet.””
“Then we'll need to verify everything before taking action.””
Michael nodded, then looked directly at me.
“I know what she did to you in school. She told me about it when we first started dating. She laughed about it like it was a funny story.””
My hands went still.
“She told you?””
“She said you were a poor girl who thought she deserved more than she had. She said you were always pretending to be better than everyone.””
I looked away.
Michael's voice cracked.
“I should have realized who she was.””
I didn't answer.
An apology from someone else's husband couldn't erase twenty years of memories.
But it did confirm something I had spent years trying to understand.
Vanessa hadn't forgotten me.
She had remembered me exactly as she'd always seen me: someone she believed she could control.
Rebecca closed her legal pad.
“Thank you for bringing this information forward. We'll contact you if we need clarification. Until then, don't access any systems or documents you aren't authorized to use, and don't confront your wife.””
Michael stood.
“There's one more thing.””
He reached into his pocket and took out his phone.
“Last night, after Vanessa caught me talking to you, she received a call. I heard her say she needed to move the original documents before the meeting tomorrow.””
“What meeting?”” I asked.
He shook his head.
“I don't know. But I recognized the address she mentioned.””
He placed a small slip of paper on my desk.
The address belonged to the historic building I'd been negotiating to purchase for Aurelia's flagship location.

And beneath it, he'd written three words.
*Hale's private office.*
