Chapter 9: The Father’s Hidden Message

For years, Ethan believed his father had left him.

Death was painful.

But simple.

A person was there one day.

Then gone the next.

But now everything Ethan believed was breaking apart.

“My dad wrote that?””

James knelt beside him.

“We need to understand what happened.””

Ethan stared at the paper.

“He was never supposed to leave.””

The words were barely audible.

James looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Ethan wiped his eyes.

“Mommy always said Daddy was helping someone.””

Maria stepped closer.

“Helping who?””

Ethan looked toward the basement.

“Caleb.””

Everyone went silent.

The pieces were finally connecting.

Ethan’s father hadn’t been a stranger to Caleb.

He had known him.

The question was why.

Back at the station, investigators worked through every document recovered from the farmhouse.

Then they found an old police report.

James opened it.

The report was from years earlier.

A witness statement.

Ethan’s father, Daniel Miller.

Maria read the first line.

“Daniel reported concerns about a man named Caleb Voss.””

James looked up.

“He tried to expose him.””

The report explained that Daniel believed Caleb was involved in missing-child cases.

But before investigators could act, Daniel died in a car accident.

The case disappeared.

The evidence disappeared.

Until now.

James felt anger building.

“Caleb didn’t just hide Olivia.””

Maria nodded.

“He removed anyone who got close.””

A phone rang.

Everyone looked toward the desk.

An officer answered.

Then immediately called James over.

“Detective.””

James picked up.

“Who is it?””

A familiar voice answered.

Rachel.

“James, you need to listen carefully.””

He moved away from the room.

“What happened?””

Her breathing was shaky.

“I found something in Caleb’s old files.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Proof that Daniel Miller was right.””

James looked around.

“Where are you?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Instead, he heard a sound.

A door closing.

James stood straighter.

“Rachel?””

Silence.

Then a man’s voice came through the phone.

Caleb.

“You always were too curious.””

James’s blood ran cold.

“Where is she?””

Caleb laughed softly.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

James tightened his grip.

“What question should I ask?””

Caleb paused.

Then whispered:

“Ask why your own department buried the truth.””

The call ended.

James stood frozen.

Maria approached.

“What happened?””

James looked at her.

“Caleb has Rachel.””

Everyone immediately moved.

But James couldn’t stop thinking about one thing.

The accusation.

Your own department.

Buried the truth.

A few minutes later, the evidence room door opened.

An older officer entered.

Someone James had worked with for years.

Sergeant Thomas Reed.

He looked at the documents on the table.

Then at James.

“You found it.””

James stared.

“Found what?””

Reed slowly closed the door.

“The reason Caleb Voss was never caught.””

The room became silent.

James took one step forward.

“Sergeant…”

Reed looked exhausted.

“I should have stopped him years ago.””

Maria reached for her weapon.

James raised his hand.

Not yet.

Because Reed’s next words changed the entire case.

“Your father knew about Caleb too.””

James froze.

“My father?””

May you like

Reed nodded.

“And he died trying to expose him.”” ```
