Chapter 3: The Secret He Hid

The police station had never felt so quiet.

Not even during the worst cases James had worked.

Because this wasn’t just about finding a missing woman.

It was about discovering how long someone had been hiding the truth.

Ethan sat in the waiting area when James returned.

The moment he saw him, he ran forward.

“Is Mommy okay?””

James dropped to one knee.

“Yes.””

Ethan froze.

“She’s alive?””

James nodded.

The boy collapsed into him, crying.

For the first time that night, his tears were not from fear.

They were from relief.

“My mommy is alive.””

James held him carefully.

“She kept fighting for you.””

Ethan wiped his face.

“What about the little girl?””

James looked toward Detective Lopez.

“She’s safe too.””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Her name is Lily.””

James looked surprised.

“You know her?””

Ethan nodded.

“She used to whisper through the wall.””

The room went silent.

James sat beside him.

“What did she say?””

Ethan looked afraid again.

“She said Mr. Walker wasn’t her daddy either.””

The words hit harder than any evidence.

Meanwhile, detectives searched every file connected to the property.

The man calling himself Walker had a real name.

Caleb Voss.

And the more they uncovered, the more disturbing the picture became.

Multiple addresses.

False identities.

Missing records.

James looked through the documents.

“He planned this.””

Maria nodded.

“He didn’t just hide Olivia. He erased her.””

Before James could answer, an officer rushed into the room.

“Detective.””

Everyone turned.

“We found something in the storage building.””

James followed him back to the evidence room.

On the table was a small locked box.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And a notebook.

Maria opened the first page.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She handed it to James.

The pages contained names.

Dates.

Locations.

Families.

James scanned the list.

Then stopped.

Because one name was written near the bottom.

Miller.

Ethan Miller.

His stomach dropped.

“This wasn’t random.””

Maria looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

James pointed at the notebook.

“He chose them.””

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

The call came from the station front desk.

An officer answered.

Then his face changed.

“Detective Carter…”

James walked over.

“What is it?””

The officer slowly removed the phone from his ear.

“There’s a woman on the line.””

“Who?””

The officer swallowed.

“She says she knows Caleb Voss.””

James reached for the phone.

“Put her through.””

A woman’s shaky voice came from the speaker.

“Is Ethan Miller there?””

James froze.

“How do you know that name?””

The woman took a deep breath.

“Because I was the last person who saw him before Caleb took him.””

James looked at Maria.

The room became tense.

The woman continued.

“I tried to warn Olivia.””

James gripped the phone.

“Who are you?””

A long silence followed.

Then the woman whispered:

“I’m Caleb Voss’s wife.””

James felt the air leave the room.

Because Caleb Voss had told everyone he had never been married.

And if this woman was telling the truth…

Then the man Ethan feared had been hiding something much bigger than anyone imagined.

The woman spoke again.

“But you need to listen carefully.””

James leaned closer.

“Why?””

Her voice cracked.

May you like

“Because Ethan wasn’t the first child he took.””

The line went dead. ```
