Chapter 14: The Truth My Father Left Behind
James couldn’t open the folder.
Not immediately.
For years, he had believed his father died because of a tragic accident.
A random moment.
A cruel twist of fate.
But now…
Everything was different.
Maria stood beside him.
“James.””
He looked at her.
“I’m okay.””
But he wasn’t.
He opened the folder.
Inside were handwritten notes.
His father’s handwriting.
Daniel Miller.
The first page contained one sentence.
“If anything happens to me, Caleb Voss is not the reason.””
James frowned.
He read the next line.
“He is only one piece.””
Maria leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
James continued reading.
Daniel had discovered Caleb years earlier.
But Caleb was not acting alone.
Someone powerful had protected him.
Someone who controlled records.
Investigations.
Information.
Someone who made problems disappear.
James turned the page.
And there it was.
A list.
Names of people who helped cover things up.
At the top was Robert Hale.
But below him were others.
Officials.
Lawyers.
People who had benefited from silence.
James felt anger.
Not because the truth was ugly.
Because it had been hidden for so long.
Emily looked at the folder.
“Your dad came here.””
James looked up.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“He found me once.””
Everyone froze.
“When?””
“Before I disappeared.””
James stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Emily looked down.
“He tried to get me away.””
Her voice shook.
“But Caleb found us.””
James felt his chest tighten.
“My father tried to save you.””
Emily nodded.
“He told me something.””
“What?””
She looked at him.
“He said his son would finish what he started.””
James stopped.
His son.
Not as a police officer.
Not as a detective.
As his father’s child.
The person who would finally uncover the truth.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed above them.
Everyone turned.
An officer rushed down.
“Detective.””
James stood.
“What happened?””
The officer looked nervous.
“Caleb escaped custody.””
Maria immediately reached for her radio.
“How?””
“He had help.””
James felt cold.
“Who?””
The officer hesitated.
Then answered:
“Chief Hale.””
The room went silent.
Again.
Hale.
Even after everything.
James grabbed his jacket.
“Where are they?””
“We tracked their vehicle.””
“To where?””
The officer looked at the map.
“Back to the Miller property.””
James froze.
The place where it began.
The place where Olivia was found.
The place Caleb built his first prison.
As they rushed outside, Emily grabbed James’s hand.
“Detective.””
He turned.
“Caleb is going there because he wants something.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“His final proof.””
James frowned.
“Proof of what?””
Emily whispered:
“That he was never the monster alone.””
The team arrived at the Miller house.
The lights were on.
Someone was inside.
James entered with officers behind him.
The living room was empty.
Then a voice came from upstairs.
“You finally understand.””
James looked up.
Caleb stood at the top of the stairs.
Beside him was Hale.
But this time, Hale looked different.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Afraid.
James raised his voice.
“It’s over.””
Caleb smiled.
“No.””
He held up a small device.
“It’s finally beginning.””
James stared.
“What is that?””
Caleb looked toward the walls.
“Everything.””
A red light blinked.
Maria noticed first.
“Camera.””
James looked around.
Hidden cameras.
Everywhere.
Caleb smiled.
“You wanted the truth.””
May you like
He pressed a button.
“So I’m going to show everyone.””
